"The Monte Palace Madeira garden covers an area of 70,000 m2 and is home to an abundant collection of exotic plants from all over the world, along with swans and ducks that inhabit the central pond, and peacocks and chickens that roam freely in the rest of the garden. In the garden's central pond, visitors can also admire the beauty and majesty of swans. As a natural habitat, these graceful animals prefer relatively shallow lakes and ponds. Although they can now be seen in gardens all over the world, black swans come from Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand, while whooper swans (white swans) come from Iceland and Scandinavia.
The Monte Palace Madeira Museum is an exhibition space with three galleries. Two are decorated with sculptures, while another houses a collection of minerals from all over the world.
The exhibition entitled “African Passion” shows part of a collection of contemporary sculptures from Zimbabwe dating from 1966 to 1969. More than 1,000 sculptures are on display on two floors of the Museum, one of which is an individual presentation of the artists and the other a recreation of the environment in which these pieces were originally created and exhibited.
“Secrets of Mother Nature” presents part of a collection of minerals mostly from Brazil, Portugal, South Africa, Zambia, Peru, Argentina and North America. This exhibition features around 700 samples arranged in cavities, which attempt to simulate the environment in which minerals are formed in the depths of our planet. Others are “suspended”, giving the impression of a planetary space, where rock masses gravitate freely. There is also a gallery with an exhibition of gemstones, with a special focus on diamonds.
One of the most interesting features of the Monte Palace Madeira garden is the large collection of tile panels placed along the walkways. Acquired by José Berardo, under the guidance of specialist Manuel Leitão, this collection is considered one of the largest and richest in the country after that of the National Tile Museum, grouping together Spanish-Moorish examples from the 15th and 16th centuries to contemporary panels.
The examples on display are representative of the decorations used in various periods. They originate from palaces, churches, chapels and residences in various parts of Portugal, and depict important religious, social and cultural events of the time and essential references to our history."
