Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque

"Built between 1869 and 1871, the mosque was commissioned by Pertevniyal Sultan, the consort of Sultan Mahmud II and the mother of Sultan Abdülaziz. Her desire to leave a lasting legacy and contribute to the city's architectural landscape led to the mosque's creation. The Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque stands out for its eclectic architectural style. While the basic structure follows the traditional Ottoman single-domed, square prayer hall design, the decorative elements showcase a fascinating blend of influences. Imagine elements of Gothic, Ottoman, Islamic, and even Indian art all woven together to create a unique visual tapestry. The mosque's facade boasts striking features like projecting central sections and windows in the Gothic style on the drum of the dome. Step inside, and you'll be greeted by lavish decorations, intricate tilework, and elegant calligraphy adorning the walls. Despite its focus on aesthetics, the mosque also prioritizes functionality. The spacious prayer hall, a separate area for women, and additional rooms for various purposes ensured a comfortable and well-organized space for worshippers. Over the years, the Pertevniyal Valide Sultan Mosque has witnessed the ebb and flow of history. Sadly, between 1956 and 1959, urban development projects led to the demolition of some of the mosque's surrounding structures, including the tomb of Pertevniyal Sultan, the assembly room, and a fountain. However, the mosque itself continues to stand tall, attracting both worshippers and visitors interested in its unique architectural blend and historical significance."
