A bit of context

Istanbul boasts a past as rich and multifaceted as the mosaics that adorn its ancient churches. Evidence suggests settlements around the area date back to a staggering 6700 BC, but the city's story truly begins around 660 BC with the arrival of Greek colonists. They established Byzantium, a strategic settlement on the Bosphorus Strait, the vital link between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.

Byzantium thrived for centuries, eventually becoming the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, and later simply known as Constantinople. Under Roman rule, the city flourished, constructing marvels like the Hagia Sophia, a magnificent cathedral that would become a symbol of the Byzantine Empire.

The city's unique location, straddling the Bosphorus and Europe and Asia, has always been a source of its power and allure. Here, grand Byzantine basilicas stand alongside soaring Ottoman mosques, a testament to the city's layered history. Wander the bustling Grand Bazaar, a sensory overload of spices and handcrafted treasures, or lose yourself in the serene Hagia Sophia, its vast dome echoing whispers of emperors and sultans.

Istanbul's magic lies not just in its magnificent monuments, but in its vibrant present. Cruise down the Bosphorus, taking in the city's ever-changing skyline. Savor fragrant Turkish coffee in a traditional tea garden, or lose yourself in the trendy Beyoğlu district's cafes and art galleries. As the sun dips below the horizon, casting fiery hues across the Bosphorus, you'll understand why Istanbul has captivated hearts for millennia – a city where history whispers from every corner, and the past and present collide in a truly unforgettable experience.
