What people say

"Operating between the last Thursday in April and the last Thursday in October. Open on Thursdays and Sundays from 4pm to 9pm. One of the most scenic markets in Australia for sure! Wander the markets as you watch the sun set off Mindil Beach! Also, one of the best markets in Australia for Indigenous art. A must-see if you're visiting Darwin. If the Top End heat is getting to you, hunt around for a papaya salad - they are super refreshing! Or if you like it hot - spice up your life with a laksa from Darwin Laksa in the Territory Space on Food Alley. The market is around a 3km walk from the city, there's free parking, or hop on public bus 4 or bus 6. Special buses operate from the Darwin Interchange (15) and Casuarina (route 19) on Thursday market days only. With over 150 food, beverage, arts and craft stalls, and live entertainment, there's something for everyone!"

"This place truly captures the city's multicultural spirit. The market comes alive as the sun sets over the ocean, and a unique tradition here is the whole crowd clapping to the spectacular sunset. You’ll find an diverse mix of stalls, offering everything from local crafts to international delicacies. Brace yourself for the crowds, especially during the dry season when it's bustling with locals and tourists alike.  "
"Open from 4-9pm on Thursday and Sunday, Mindil Sunset Market is the largest market in the region. Enjoy the sun setting over the water as you browse the stalls and enjoy the different food dishes on offer. Listen to local musicians and watch street performers and buskers in this vibrant market."

We do love a good local market! Being 'in town' on the right day to catch market day is crucial - sometimes they're daily (or nightly!), some are on Saturdays or Sundays, and some are only on every second weekend or so. So do plan ahead - and don't miss out! We love wandering around and checking out the local products and wares - especially the food!! We're pretty biased and think Salamanca Market in Lutruwita/Tasmania is the best market in the world! Yesssss we know Barcelona's La Rambla Market is pretty darn impressive and we've been to some epic markets in Asia and South America too, but Nipaluna/Hobart packs well above its weight with an amazing local arts, craft and artisan scene, very talented buskers and of course the food is amazing! You can also pick up great handmade souvenirs as well as locally grown fruit, veg and other produce. Australia's markets are not to be missed. Wander through the stalls and rub shoulders with locals and tourists alike. And, of course, in Australia markets are safe (no pick pockets!), are generally accessible (check the website links below for more!) and many are committed to sustainability with biodegradable, recycled or reusable packaging and no single-use plastics in sight. Feel good by supporting local businesses and artists. And if you do feel the need to buy souvenirs - check the labelling and make sure you are buying locally made products whenever you can. OK now we're craving a papaya salad at sunset at Mindil Market in Darwin!!
