Road Trip Cairns to Perth - 32 Days
(Shot on DJI Mavic Air Drone - Karijini National Park)
Before we start, it makes sense to explain that their are some factors to this trip that are worth considering and everyones situation is slightly different. Your trip will be a totally different experience to ours even if you followed the guide to the exact route we took. You never know what awaits you on an aussie road trip!
We left Cairns for Perth in September 2021 so lots may have changed since then. The Aussie outback can have some serious extreme weather events and it is always wise to keep up to date on which roads/areas are accessible before taking on a big trip like this.
Hopefully, this trip guide will be of use to you if you are considering doing the same or even part of this trip.
Considerations: These things will potentially drastically change many aspects of your trip. So to start with the vehicle that we did this drive in is our trusty 2001 Mitsubishi Pajero 4WD with a roof top tent. The 4x4 allowed us to take parts of this route that many 2WD cars would not be able to. If you would like to take a van or 2WD car then you may need to use alternative routes but you will see which parts are 4WD only and can potentially plan around that. Secondly, the seasons. We did this drive right at the end of the dry season in September – October. Consider that in the wet season, some sections of the route may be impassable. Time and budget; lastly you need to ask yourself what your timeframe is and how much it will cost you. You will do a lot more kilometres than what google maps tells you! That means more time, fuel and inevitably more money.
