The best markets in Australia: Great food, souvenirs and much more!

The best markets in Australia: Great food, souvenirs and much more!

We do love a good local market! Being 'in town' on the right day to catch market day is crucial - sometimes they're daily (or nightly!), some are on Saturdays or Sundays, and some are only on every second weekend or so. So do plan ahead - and don't miss out! We love wandering around and checking out the local products and wares - especially the food!! We're pretty biased and think Salamanca Market in Lutruwita/Tasmania is the best market in the world! Yesssss we know Barcelona's La Rambla Market is pretty darn impressive and we've been to some epic markets in Asia and South America too, but Nipaluna/Hobart packs well above its weight with an amazing local arts, craft and artisan scene, very talented buskers and of course the food is amazing! You can also pick up great handmade souvenirs as well as locally grown fruit, veg and other produce. Australia's markets are not to be missed. Wander through the stalls and rub shoulders with locals and tourists alike. And, of course, in Australia markets are safe (no pick pockets!), are generally accessible (check the website links below for more!) and many are committed to sustainability with biodegradable, recycled or reusable packaging and no single-use plastics in sight. Feel good by supporting local businesses and artists. And if you do feel the need to buy souvenirs - check the labelling and make sure you are buying locally made products whenever you can. OK now we're craving a papaya salad at sunset at Mindil Market in Darwin!!

1. Salamanca Market (TAS)

Salamanca Market operates in Nipaluna/Hobart's Salamanca Place ('Sally' to the locals!) every Saturday from 8:30am to 3pm. Simon is a very biased Tasmanian but he reckons it's the best market in Oz. Whether it's a tasty treat, a thoughtful gift or simply great produce - you'll find it all in abundance at Salamanca Market.

Simon's hot tip: The buskers! You'll see some amazing local talent. Oh and the Smallest Pancakes in town are pretty delish too!!

3. Queen Victoria Market (VIC)

Back in our home-base of Naarm/Melbourne, we have a pretty regular weekend pilgrimage to the Queen Vic Market (or Vic Market) to buy our fresh fruit and veggies. Great quality and great prices! We maybe treat ourselves to a cheese and spinach borek from The Borek Shop too...

One of the biggest markets in the country, the Queen Vic is a grand old girl who has been serving locals for over 140 years. The market is also a tourist attraction in its own right - you can even book an educational tour or a foodie's grazing tour.

Shiela reckons: The early bird gets the worm (and beats the crowds!). You can park in the market car park early and leave before 9am for free parking.

8. Stanthorpe Market in the Mountains (QLD)

We love to visit country towns across Australia. Whether it's the local pub and a refreshing beer off the tap, or the local bakery with award-winning pies - we stop and support local businesses whenever we can. And what can be a real surprise package is the weekend markets in those country towns - sometimes held only once or twice a month - but people come far-and-wide, and they are well worth checking out. Stanthorpe hosts one of the best regional markets we've seen!

The 'Market in the Mountains' at Stanthorpe is a 100% local artisan and handcrafted market - so it supports local artists, crafters, farmers, makers and growers. And if you're one of those people who collect random old rusty, dusty tools and farm machinery - Stanthorpe has got something for you too!

We discovered Choose Dairy Free's delicious cashew vegan cheeses at Stanthorpe Market - there really is something for everyone!

9. The Rocks Markets in Sydney (NSW)

We haven't hung out in Sydney for a while - but we'd always head to 'The Rocks' to capture the true essence of the harbour city. Nestled under the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Rocks Markets run from 10am to 5pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

The market is more geared towards tourists with speciality goods, and it isn't a market for stocking up on your fresh fruit and veggies. But there is an incredible range of high-quality artisan products to check out. If markets can be well... upmarket - this is probably the poshest market in Australia!

For food we would head straight towards La Gitana for paella and Zam for Malaysian street foods! Yummmmm!!!
