"The Bica Elevator was designed by the Portuguese engineer Raoul Mesnier du Ponsard, also responsible for numerous similar projects, and the inauguration took place on June 28, 1892.
It was initially powered by the water counterweight system (the car that was going to start the descent filled a water tank, located on the roof; with the force resulting from this additional weight, combined with the gravitational force of the inclined plane, it towed the car on the way up) and by tramway-cab system. In 1896 it began to run on steam and, later, in 1914, it was electrified. That same year he suffered an accident and was out of action for nine years.
With more than a century of existence, it is the most typical elevator in the city of Lisbon and, although it does not have the same footfall as the Elevador da Glória, it is currently one of the main tourist attractions in the Portuguese capital."

"If visiting in June, this is THE SPOT to come celebrate Santos Populares.
Also if you want a photo with the iconic yellow tram, you can grab that Insta-worthy shot at the top of the hill!"
