For those who donโ€™t follow me on Instagram, here's a bit of background: I traveled to Pugliaโ€™s main attractions and stunning sights using only public transport. I stayed with a friend, but if you're heading to Bari during the low season (March-May or late September-November), you can find really affordable accommodation on platforms like Booking, Airbnb, or Locktrip. The high season typically runs from late June to the end of August due to various holidays.

If you're looking for a unique experience, visit Bari in early May for one of its biggest events. The city hosts a major religious festival from May 7th-9th, celebrating the 1087 arrival of St. Nicholas' relics. Thousands of people from across Apulia gather for the festivities, which include priests setting sail with an icon of St. Nicholas in a symbolic gesture. Itโ€™s a vibrant and fun cultural experience.

Bari also hosts several music festivals in the summer, so check out events in advance as they can impact accommodation prices.

๐Ÿ’ About Bari:

Bari, the capital of Apulia in southern Italy, is a key economic and cultural hub on the Adriatic Sea. Home to 315,000 residents, the city blends history and modernity with its historic old town, featuring landmarks like the Basilica of Saint Nicholas, and its vibrant Murat quarter, known for shopping and nightlife.

History of Bari:

Bari's history stretches back to ancient times when it was known as "Barium" and was an important port and trading hub for the Romans. Its significance grew throughout the Middle Ages, becoming a Byzantine stronghold and later falling under Norman control in 1071. During this time, Bari became known for the relics of Saint Nicholas, which were brought to the city in 1087. The presence of these relics turned Bari into a major religious pilgrimage site. The city also played a role in the Crusades, with Urban II convening a significant council here in 1098. Despite periods of decline under foreign rulers, Bari saw a resurgence during the Renaissance and continued its growth into the modern era.
