Your Guide to Vancouver
Know Before You Go
Vancouver is a great city to explore but just like every city, there are some good tidbits to know before you get here. Here are a few things for you to know to make sure you are equipped for Vancouver!
Weather
The weather in Vancouver is characterized by relatively warm summers and mild winters. During the summer months of June to August, the average temperatures range from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius (68 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit), with occasional hotter days reaching the high 20s or low 30s Celsius (80s to 90s Fahrenheit). Summers in Vancouver are generally dry, with little rainfall and plenty of sunshine, making it the best time to come and explore Vancouver!
In the winter months of December to February, Vancouver experiences cooler temperatures, but it remains relatively mild compared to many other parts of Canada. Average temperatures range from 3 to 8 degrees Celsius (37 to 46 degrees Fahrenheit), with occasional colder spells and temperatures dropping below freezing. Rain is common during the winter season, so make sure you bring an umbrella and rainjacket as the rain can be moderate to heavy throughout this time.
Spring (March to May) and fall (September to November) in Vancouver are transitional seasons characterized by mild temperatures and changing weather patterns. These seasons can be unpredictable, with a mix of sunny and rainy days. Lately, we have been experiencing rain up to May/June and really sunny days from summer til October.
It's important to note that Vancouver's weather can vary day to day, and even within different areas of the city. Even though it says one thing on the weather forecast, it may not be true so be prepared with a light jacket, layers, and a small umbrella!
How to Get Around
Vancouver is a very walkable city. We don't have big hills so it's quite flat for easy strolls. There are 3 pedestrian friendly bridges that will take you from Downtown to a different neighborhood. To this day, I've never owned a car before and normally walk or take transit to get to my destinations.
Many locals love to bike here which is also a great way to get around the city. We have designated bike lanes and streets that are designated majority for bikes which makes it a tad safer to bike with the cars on the streets.
Our metro is called the skytrain and that coupled with buses are also a convenient way to get around. The only annoying thing is the buses are often late or extremely packed with people during rush hours - which means there may be 2 or 3 buses that will pass you until you can get on one!
Having said that, if you are coming in from the Airport, I highly recommend using the skytrain as it's super convenient to take you straight to downtown. To use the skytrain and buses, you can tap your credit cards or get a Compass Card (which is cheaper and also offers day passes if you ne
We also have taxis and uber/lyfts here as well. To be honest, sometimes taxis are actually cheaper or the same price as uber/lyfts and all taxis use meters here.
Tipping
Tipping is common in Vancouver and the norm is 15 - 20%. Sometimes at restaurants with large parties, there may be an autogratuity included. Quick service counters and coffee shops now also have tip prompts which is appreciated but not necessary.
Stores to Note
London Drugs/Shopper's Drug Mart/Rexall
If you need to purchase any toiletries and hygeine products, OTC medication, or even food, these are the stores to go to and very common for Vancouver locals to shop at. Normally post offices are also located into one of these locations. I personally go to London Drugs and Shopper's most because their prices are good and there are sales. Rexall I go when I am desperate but their prices are higher.
Superstore, Safeway, Save On, No Frills
These are the super markets we have in the city that Vancouver locals generally shop at. Superstores are located more in the suburban areas but there are many Save On & Safeways throughout the city. No Frills is the cheapest option for groceries
BC Liquor Store
Our liquor is sold at BC liquor stores and wines can also be purchased at Save On Foods - make sure you have 2 pieces of ID with you!
Crime
Vancouver is growing into a bigger city, and like any city, some areas are safer than others. If you're visiting for the first time, it's best to avoid the area east of West Hastings past Cambie Street. Also, be mindful in parts of Gastown and Chinatown, as some spots can be a bit sketchy. Just use your common sense and stay aware of your surroundings.
