The White Tower - Turnul Alb
@amyisgoingplaces
Built in the 1400's (there's some debate on the exact year), the White Tower was part of Braşov's medieval defense system that encircles the oldest part of the city.
The tower is occasionally open for tours inside its 5-stories. However, even if you can't go inside, it's worth the visit!
From the exterior, you get one of the best scenic overlooks of the city. The panorama includes the full span from modern construction to the east, through the oldest center of the city including Council Square and the Black Church, the BRASOV sign on Mount Tâmpa, into Schei district and the mountains in the west.
For postcard worthy photos, the White Tower can't be missed!
Note:
You can hike up to the White Tower from Strada Dupa Ziduri, "the street behind the walls," or you can drive up Calea Poienii and park at a small scenic overlook near the tower.

You can hike or drive to The White Tower. Walk up the steps facing the city and turn around to see one of the most beautiful views of the old medieval city center.
The Black Tower - Turnul Negru
@amyisgoingplaces
Built in the 1400's (there's some debate on the exact year), the Black Tower was part of Braşov's medieval defense system that encircles the oldest part of the city.
On separate occasions in the 1500's and 1600's, fire and lightning scorched the walls, turning them black, giving the structure its name of the Black Tower.
In 1995, the tower was repaired and renovated as a small museum, with the modern glass roof replacing original architectural design.
From the exterior, you get one of the best scenic overlooks of the city. The panorama includes the full span from modern construction to the east, through the oldest center of the city including Council Square and the Black Church, the BRASOV sign on Mount Tâmpa, into Schei district and the mountains in the west.
For postcard worthy photos, the Black Tower can't be missed!
Note:
You can hike up to the Black Tower from Strada Dupa Ziduri, "the street behind the walls." A trail connects it to the White Tower.

Along the same hiking path, but not accessible by car, is The Black Tower. Its balcony offers similar views to those from The White Tower.
Mount Tâmpa
@amyisgoingplaces
Take a day hike to the top of Mount Tâmpa, location of the iconic BRASOV sign! From the peak, you can see the entire city of Brasov, from historic Schei outside the old city walls, through the old city center, to the modern city on the outskirts, and the newly opened international airport in the plain beyond the city. In other directions, you have a panorama of endless mountains to rest your eyes upon.
Depending on your pace and the trail difficulty you choose, the hike up will take between 45 minutes and 2 hours. The hike down is less strenuous and usually a little faster.
Want the views without the hike? No problem! You can also take the cable car up and down for around 10 RON. Be sure to check hours for the days and times you plan to go.
NOTE:
The cable car is closed for renovations starting October 2024, expected to reopen in spring 2025.

Two for one photo ops are available at the peak of Mount Tâmpa.
You can see the whole city of Brașov, from the valley beyond Schei, through the historic center, into the modern construction of the last century, all the way to the newly opened Brașov-Ghimbav International Airport.
The second photo op here is the Hollywood style Brașov sign. Hike up directly behind it to an overlook for views of the city and of the sign itself.

Biserica Neagra, The Black Church
@amyisgoingplaces
The fortified church Biserica Neagra, "The Black Church," dates from the medieval era. Visitors can tour the church grounds for free, visit the interior for around 20 RON (less for students and children), and attend weekly concerts according to the season (prices vary by event).
Displays inside chronicle the history of the building over the centuries, including renovations and expansions. You can see original paintings, Transylvanian rugs, religious artwork, and architectural masterpieces.
It's a fascinating snapshot into the culture of Romania as a whole and Brasov in particular.
Tickets for entry may be purchased at the gift shop across from the church.

Of course we can't leave out Brașov's most iconic landmark, the massive gothic fortified church, Biserica Neagra, The Black Church. Inside and out, you'll have no lack of interesting photography material here.
Bonus location!
Poarta Ecaterinei, Catherine's Gate
@amyisgoingplaces
Walk through one of the old gates into the walled medieval city of Brasov.
The 4 turrets, looking very fairy-tale-esque, were a sign of jurisdiction.
The gate is situated between Poarta Schei, or Schei Gate, and the College of Forestry building for the University of Transylvania.
Directly inside the city wall through the gate is a peaceful garden with benches. The area outside the old city wall includes a walking path around the university building with benches, trees and plants with labels of type/species, and carves wooden sculptures of native animals.
Poarta Ecaterinei is a perfect place to snap pictures. Not only is the gate beautiful. You can also see Biserica Neagra, the Black Church, towering behind it and the BRASOV sign atop nearby Mount Tâmpa.
Details
A medieval gate that looks like a fairy tale castle? We're here for it. The castle, I mean gate, is a worthy photo subject in itself. However, if you move slightly to the north of the gate, you'll spy the clocktower of Biserica Neagra. If you angle toward the south, you get a gorgeous view of Mount Tâmpa and the Brașov sign.
