If you only had one day in Cleveland, what would you do?

A little history…

Cleveland: A Rust Belt Gem with a Rich History

Nestled on the shores of Lake Erie, Cleveland, Ohio, boasts a fascinating history that dates back centuries before its official founding in 1796. Long before European settlers arrived, the land was home to various indigenous tribes, including the Erie, Seneca, and Wyandot, who thrived in harmony with the natural surroundings.

The city's story began in earnest with the arrival of General Moses Cleaveland and his surveying team, who laid out the groundwork for what would become a bustling metropolis. Cleveland's strategic location on the Cuyahoga River and Lake Erie made it a prime spot for trade and industry, attracting immigrants from all over the world.

The 19th century marked a period of rapid growth for Cleveland, fueled by the Industrial Revolution. The city became a major manufacturing hub, known for its steel mills, automobile factories, and oil refineries. This era saw the rise of prominent figures like John D. Rockefeller, who founded Standard Oil in Cleveland.

However, like many Rust Belt cities, Cleveland faced economic decline in the latter half of the 20th century as industries shifted and jobs dwindled. Yet, the city persevered, undergoing a remarkable revitalization in recent decades. Today, Cleveland is a vibrant destination with a thriving arts scene, world-class museums, and a burgeoning culinary scene.

From its indigenous roots to its industrial heyday and modern renaissance, Cleveland's history is a testament to its resilience and enduring spirit.

Fast forward to today…

Today, Cleveland is a city on the rise, brimming with energy and innovation. Its downtown skyline is a testament to its resurgence, with modern architecture juxtaposed with historic buildings. The city's vibrant arts scene, anchored by world-class institutions like the Cleveland Museum of Art and the Playhouse Square Center, draws visitors from far and wide. A burgeoning culinary scene, featuring renowned chefs and diverse dining options, has earned Cleveland a reputation as a foodie destination.

One of Cleveland's greatest assets is its expansive system of Metroparks, often referred to as the "Emerald Necklace." These 18 reservations, encompassing over 23,000 acres, offer a haven for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. From the serene beauty of the Lakefront Reservation to the challenging trails of the Rocky River Reservation, there's something for everyone. Whether you're seeking a peaceful hike, a scenic bike ride, or a family picnic, the Metroparks provide endless opportunities to connect with nature.

A one-day itinerary for Cleveland

This itinerary is ordered moving east to west, but it can be reversed with the exception of restaurants(due to timing).

Squire's Castle
@lauradrapac
Almost completely outdoors, the ruins of this “castle” lie on the public property of the Cleveland Metroparks. The forest, structures, and green spaces make up the brightest jewel in our “emerald necklace” park system that envelops the city in a lush greenway. Squire’s castle was built in 1897 by Fergus B. Squire–executive of Standard Oil Company–as the gatehouse for a much larger estate that never came to fruition. Squire’s wife was not fond of the property, so plans ceased development. After many years of changing hands, abandonment, and vandalization Squire’s Castle was sold to the Cleveland Metroparks and was eventually altered to the pared-down structure that it is today. Many couples make happy memories here with proposals surrounded by the beauty of the open-air space. Families are found speckling the vast green lawn. The hills and valleys host hikers day-in and out. Overall, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Clevelander who didn’t have a soft spot for Squire’s Castle.

The Stone Oven Bakery and Cafe
@lauradrapac
A small bakery in Cleveland Heights, Stone Oven Bakery is the ideal spot to grab a sandwich, a scone, and a sit. I recommend the curry chicken salad sandwich on multigrain bread with a side of couscous!

The Cleveland Museum of Art
@lauradrapac
Opening in 1916, the Cleveland Museum of Art (CMA) is not to be missed. Upon deeding the land that the museum was built upon, Jeptha Wade declared that the space was “for the benefit of all the people forever”. In doing so, Wade opened the doors to art to the broadest possible audience: the public. Even today the museum is free for all to enter, with very limited costs associated with select rotating exhibitions.

West Side Market
@lauradrapac
Possibly the most visited landmark in town, the historic West Side Market is one of the oldest continuously-operating public markets in America. The property is city-owned and hosts nearly 70 family-owned small businesses in their indoor market and open-air produce arcade. If you’re planning on cooking while you’re in town, head to the market to purchase fresh ingredients for supper. Favorite spots include Kate’s Fish for premium seafood and amazing customer service, Ohio City Pasta for fresh filled and cut noodles, and D. W. Whitaker Meats for premium cuts for meat-lovers. Looking for a snack? Stop by Juice Garden, Theresa’s Bakery, and Pizza Di Bella(try the famous Cleveland pizza bagel here), then climb the stairs in the southeast corner of the building to enjoy a bite while gazing at the beautiful thatched brick ceiling from the balcony. HOT TIP: Quarters are close at the West Side Market, so leave strollers and big bags at home. Bring only what you absolutely need or it might take a while to navigate through the crowd.

Il Rione
@lauradrapac
Enjoy dinner and a show at the dimly-lit, cozy, classically cool Il Rione, where pizzas are hand-tossed and fired before your eyes. Favorite pies include the Rosanna and the Speck. If the weather is nice enough ask to be seated on their back patio for a serene scene next to a handmade bicycle-themed fountain! HOT TIP: This place doesn’t take reservations, so go about an hour before you’re hungry. If there’s a wait, put your name on the list and head to Superelectric Pinball Parlor at the corner to enjoy a beverage and a few games while you wait.

Rocky River Reservation
@lauradrapac
Begin or end your day at the Rocky River reservation, another gorgeous spot in the Cleveland Metroparks. It is by far one of the most fun places to go for a leisurely drive with the windows down. I highly recommend enjoying golden hour at the mouth of the Rocky River along the northernmost portion of the parkway.
