"Almost completely outdoors, the ruins of this “castle” lie on the public property of the Cleveland Metroparks. The forest, structures, and green spaces make up the brightest jewel in our “emerald necklace” park system that envelops the city in a lush greenway.
Squire’s castle was built in 1897 by Fergus B. Squire–executive of Standard Oil Company–as the gatehouse for a much larger estate that never came to fruition. Squire’s wife was not fond of the property, so plans ceased development. After many years of changing hands, abandonment, and vandalization Squire’s Castle was sold to the Cleveland Metroparks and was eventually altered to the pared-down structure that it is today.
Many couples make happy memories here with proposals surrounded by the beauty of the open-air space. Families are found speckling the vast green lawn. The hills and valleys host hikers day-in and out. Overall, you’d be hard-pressed to find a Clevelander who didn’t have a soft spot for Squire’s Castle."
