Your Cheat Sheet to Different Eateries in Italy (with recs.)

In Italy, you'll come across various terms for what Americans would simply call a "restaurant". Each of them serves a distinct purpose and offers different services. While definitions and rules of each have become somewhat blurred in recent years, it's still helpful to know the differences while there. Knowing the types of food and drinks that these places offer will be helpful so you know what to expect when trying to plan your meals and make reservations. Whether you're seeking a formal meal, a casual bite, or a specific Italian specialty, understanding what each of these types of restaurants offers ahead of time will ensure you get exactly what you are looking for with no surprises. Here are the primary types of eateries in Italy, how they differ, and an example of each.

Ristorante

“Ristorante” means it will be a full-service restaurant, and there should according to history be a host or hostess to seat you. These places typically provide a full-service experience with professional waitstaff, and they are ideal for a leisurely, multi-course meal.

Trattoria

The trattorias are traditionally family-owned, casual, rustic neighborhood restaurants that serve fresh, homestyle, local food. The menu is both unassuming and authentic. Trattorias offer a more casual setting compared to ristoranti and provide a cozy and welcoming atmosphere.

Trattoria Da Enzo al 29

Fair warning: Da Enzo does not take reservations and there will be a line. That being said: the wait is SO worth it. Try: all the traditional pasta dishes, the burrata caprese, the meatballs and the tiramisu. You must come hungry :) If interested in coming here, ask me for tips on how to tackle the line, the wait, and the best time to get to Da Enzo to guarantee you get a seat.

Ostaria

Ostarias were traditionally even simpler than trattorias and usually had no menu, although these rules have been bent in modern times, especially in the more populated areas. What they offer changes daily, according to the market, and two or three courses are offered for a fixed price, including wine. The food and wine are very simple and rustic, showcasing regional specialties and the vibe is cozy and informal.

Pizzeria

Pizzerias are, you guessed it, where you get pizza. These establishments range from casual to more upscale, and they often offer a variety of traditional and creative pizza options. Some pizzerias may also have a broader menu that includes pasta and other Italian dishes. Pizzerias are different from casual, fast food spots where you can grab a quick pizza al taglio (by the cut) which come in squares or rectangles and are easy to eat on-the-go. At pizzerias, you are served full, circular pies so come hungry!

Enoteca

An enoteca is a wine bar that also serves light snacks and appetizers. The focus is on the wine selection, and they often showcase a variety of local and regional wines. Traditionally, enoteche served no food; they were just a place to go and drink wine. There aren't really any tavern-style bars like you would find in the U.S. but enoteche are the closest thing. Back in the day, people stop in for a glass of wine on the way to another spot for a full meal. Now, most enoteche serve some light bites and are a great place to hang in the afternoon and early evening.

Alimentari

This is essentially a supermarket but much smaller in scope. It is typically family-owned and serves the same purpose as a supermarket, selling produce, pasta, canned foods, wine etc. whereas supermarkets are much bigger and sell food (cibo), drinks, drug products, and other general items. Alimentari are great for supporting local small businesses and grabbing some essentials to pack for a picnic or making a meal at your rental during your stay.
