Do you get overwhelmed while walking the streets of Rome? From waiters trying to usher you into restaurants or menus with photos... Here are 5 authentic restaurants in Rome that serve traditional Roman dishes made with local, seasonal ingredients... that I recommend booking in advance!

1. Roscioli Salumeria

Roscioli is a MUST when in Rome. As soon as you have your dates booked, make a lunch or dinner reservation at Roscioli. This beloved spot offers an amazing selection of cured meats, cheeses, and traditional Roman pasta dishes. The Carbonara is a classic (duh! It's Rome), but other pastas like Amatriciana and Alla Gricia are just as spectacular.

2. Marzapane

Marzapane is a gem just north of Piazza del Popolo and focuses on seasonal and local ingredients. This contemporary restaurant is known for its innovative dishes that stay true to Roman traditions while adding a creative twist. Additionally, their wine list is vast and delicious -- remember to opt for something local (maybe something from Frascati?!).

3. San Palato

At the heart of Roman slow food is San Palato, where the emphasis is on authentic, home-style cooking -- reducing waste and crafting delicious plates that reflect traditional Roman cuisine (and cucina povera). From hearty pastas to savory meat dishes, every bite is a testament to the city's rich culinary heritage... and Santo Palato's ability to make you want to savor every bite.

4. Retro Pane e Pasta

If you want a fancy dinner in Rome, then make this the one. This is one of my personal favorites, offering the most delicious homemade pasta and rustic bread. The warm, welcoming atmosphere and dedication to quality make it a must-visit spot for an authentic dining experience. The tasting menu offers the perfect portions to try the season's best flavors. Also, the extensive wine list ensures you'll find something new to enjoy.
