South Korea Travel Guide (Free)
Arriving in Korea
You are likely to arrive at Incheon International Airport, which is great news! Incheon International Airport has been holding a Top 5 spot in the Skytrax World Airport Awards for over 10 years. Popular attractions include Changing of the Guard ceremonies, traditional Korean music performances, art installations, and so much more!
Getting Around
For domestic travel in South Korea you will find a lot of different options for every budget. The railway system is super convenient to travel to cities like Busan, Gangneung, Gyeongju and more! Sightly off-the-radar locations may require you to get a bus instead, and if you are planning a trip to Jeju, a popular island in the very south of Korea, you could take a quick domestic flight or even a ferry from Busan.
Subway
Seoul's subway system is extensive and super convenient, just make sure to check the direction! If you are staying in Seoul for several days make sure to look into the Climate Card pass for tourists. It's currently available for 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7 days and offers unlimited travel on the subway within Seoul. Check the service range carefully as some subway lines go outside of Seoul, like for example Suwon. If you don't plan to use the subway in Seoul that much or have plans to travel outside of Seoul get a T-Money card. You can top it up as needed and it can also be used in other cities in Korea.
Trains
There are two high-speed train services available, KTX and SRT. If you are in Seoul, the main station for taking the KTX is Seoul Station, whereas the SRT departs from Suseo, located in the south of Gangnam. Apart from the KTX and SRT there are much cheaper (and slower) local trains available as well. You can buy tickets at the station or use the offical Korail app.
Intercity Buses
Flights
If you are thinking of catching a domestic flight to Jeju or maybe Busan you will most likely departing from Gimpo Airport, which is closer to the city of Seoul than Incheon International Airport.
Taxis
Taxis are relatively affordable and a good option to travel short distances. I'd recommend you download a taxi app called Kakao T.
When to go
South Korea has four seasons. Winter months (December - February) can be very cold while the summer months (June - August) feature heavy rain in the beginning followed by high humidity. Some of the best times to visit Korea are spring and autumn. Cherry blossom season (early April) as well as autumn foliage (around October) are popular with tourists and locals alike. Avoid travel during the main holidays, Lunar New Year and Chuseok, as prices will be high and bus and train tickets are sold out super fast.
Where to stay
Many travelers choose to stay in Hongdae when they first arrive. It's close to the airport and has lots of entertainment and shopping to offer. If you're main focus is exploring cultural sights and travel around the city Myeongdong and Insadong might be a better option for you! Here are some accomodations you might wanna consider.
