Scotland in a camper van (2/3) - Across the country

Our journey across Scotland begins here. Dinner in the pub was a good new experience. The night was quiet, warm inside and cool outside. In the morning, the meadow in front of us was covered in frost.

As they say, Edinburgh's ‘other castle’, which stood a mile outside the old city walls and offered a retreat from the Scottish capital. Craigmillar Castle was close to the political cauldron of Edinburgh, but pleasingly separate from it.

There are many exciting things you can see and experience in Edinburgh. Stunning buildings, hidden alleys and an impressive castle high on an extinct volcano make the city truly unique.

A small but mighty brewery located in Edinburgh’s Leith district, Pilot Beer focuses on quality over quantity. Their taproom offers a laid-back experience with a rotating selection of their beers. Beer to try: Pilot Mochaccino Stout, Blonde Ale

Towering side by side over the Firth of Forth, these structures represent the pinnacle of engineering across three centuries. The oldest of the bridges, The Forth Bridge, is now a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site of unique global significance and interest.

Rooted in a rich history, The Helix stands as a testament to the resilience and spirit of Falkirk. From its industrial past to its transformation into a symbol of renewal, this park embodies the essence of progress and innovation.

The ship that never sailed. Blackness is often called ‘the ship that never sailed’. From the seaward side it looks just like a great stone ship run aground.

Once a majestic royal residence of the Stewarts, Linlithgow Palace today lies roofless and ruined. Yet entering the palace gates still inspires awe in visitors.

Cairnpapple, one of the most important prehistoric monuments on the Scottish mainland, was used as a burial and ceremonial site from around 3000 to 1400 BC.

John O'Groats Brewery is a small but respected microbrewery in one of Scotland's best known and most northerly destinations, John O'Groats. The brewery uses local ingredients wherever possible to create beers that are both traditional and innovative.
