A Bakery Tour of Copenhagen

A Bakery Tour of Copenhagen

If you were asked "What is the best city for baked goods in the world?" You'd probably say Paris, and with good reason. But Copenhagen is a close second. Danes love their hygge - a word that roughly means "coziness" - and a key tenet of hygge is sweets. Lots and lots of sweets. With coffee specifically. When your winter days only last seven hours, Danes need all of the warmth one can conjure, and baked goods are one of the best ways to accomplish that. Truly any bakery in Copenhagen is a good one. Even chains have fantastic pastries - a grab and go pastry at Lagekagehuset (basically a Danish bakery version of Starbucks) would be a top five pastry contender in most cities across North America. But I want to share some of the best of the best here for your next trip to Copenhagen.

Juno the bakery
@markfedoronko
Quite possibly the best of the bunch and certainly my favorite bakery in Copenhagen (if not the world), Juno the Bakery is located on an unassuming Østerbro corner - until you see the 20 person deep queue for their delicious pastries and breads. Headed by Emil Glaser - former pastry chef at the legendary Noma - Juno the Bakery produces a melange of traditional and modern pastries. With famed cardamon rolls (a common motif on this list) alongside unique pastries like pistachio rose snails, there are no bad choices here. Open Wednesday through Sunday, Juno the Bakery is a great start to the day!

Skt. Peders Bageri
@markfedoronko
Situated in a back alley in Copenhagen's Latin Quarter by Copenhagen University, Sct Peders Bageri claims to be the oldest bakery in Copenhagen. Stuffed with all the classics like cardamon rolls, cinnamon rolls, tebirkes (a poppy seed pastry), and much more, Sct Peders Bageri is a classic Danish bakery. On Wednesday, the bakery sells "onsdagssnegle" - Wednesday snails - a sticky cinnamon roll that resembles the more British/American Chelsea bun/cinnamon roll; over 4,000 are sold each Wednesday. The bakery is open every day except for Sunday.

Lille Bakery
@markfedoronko
Quite literally the "Small" bakery, Lille Bakery has become a rockstar in the Copenhagen bakery community since it opened in 2018. Situated in Refshaleøen, the bakery is a little further out of the way, but it's worth the journey. Proud of their connections with local farms, Lille Bakery churns out some of the freshest breads and pastries anywhere in the city. Open Wednesday through Sunday, make sure to get there early as possible because they do sell out!

Conditori La Glace
@markfedoronko
Just like Skt Peders above, Conditori La Glace claims to be the oldest bakery in Copenhagen. Dating back to 1870, La Glace is situated in an old building filled with classic luxury. Chandeliers, engravings, mirrors with gold trim - that's the sort of stuff you're in for during a visit. It's a stark contrast to the minimalist, modern, Nordic design you'll find at Juno the Bakery and Lille Bakery. In addition to the standard bakery fare, Conditori La Glace also boasts a large number of desserts and cakes on their menu. Think of this as Denmark's response to the grandeur of the Viennese or Hungarian coffee house - and a good one at that! Open seven days a week, you can even reserve a table if there is a specific room you want to sit in.

Broder Jakobs Stenugnsbageri
@markfedoronko
From my other guide "A Bakery Tour of Copenhagen": I know Skåne is in Sweden and not Denmark, but it is just over the large Øresund Bridge. Believe it or not, this region of Sweden was historically part of Denmark; the Swedes will even admit the people in Skåne are basically Danes. When we went to Copenhagen, we spent a day exploring the other side of the bridge in the charming small city of Malmö and the stunning college/cathedral town of Lund. In both of these towns, locals will enthusiastically send you Broder Jakobs to get your pastry fix. Family owned and cozy as can be, Broder Jakobs brings out the Nordic classics - cinnamon rolls, cardamon rolls, delicious breads and scones, and even more. We visited the Lund location, which is occupied by a very academic crowd - a mix of students and intellectuals. The inside features lots of greenery, while the outside courtyard provides an amazing spot to spend a warm summer afternoon. A trip to the Swedish side of the sound is simply incomplete without a stop at Broder Jakobs - a great place to take a traditional Swedish fika, or coffee break!

Lagkagehuset
@markfedoronko
This place on the guide is a bit cheeky. Lagekagehuset is basically the Danish bakery equivalent to Starbucks. Is it the best in the city? No. Can you find one everywhere? Absolutely. And if you're in a rush in the morning and want to get a cake or Vienna bread, will it be delicious? Damn right it will be!
