Athens and The Marathon

Athens and The Marathon

Emma Eichhorn
Are you coming to Athens for the Authentic Marathon? Well, in November of 2024, my family did just that! This itinerary was designed to give them the perfect balance of Athens tourism and Marathon prep. If you're looking for inspiration for getting the most out of your time in Athens, while also ensuring you are ready to give it your all on race day, Here's a 10 day plan made for people just like you!

Museum Visit

Museum of Ancient Greek Technology Kotsanas
@emmaeichhorn
This museum is an absolute delight, particularly for those with an engineering mind or you who can't resist interacting with the exhibits. When you arrive, you will be asked if you would like to purchase a ticket exclusively for the ancient technology portion of the museum or a combined ticket that includes two small exhibits on armor and musical instruments. It is my personal recommendation to stick with the basic ticket and just enjoy all of the wonderful examples of ancient Greece's technological prowess.

Morning Run

Pedion tou Areos
@emmaeichhorn
This park is perfect if you're wanting to get out of the city-center without traveling too far. The park is quite large with two playgrounds, two small Greek Orthodox churches, a cafe, bathrooms, open spaces and paved walkways for bikes, roller-skates, etc., open grassy areas to spread out a blanket or let your dog run, multiple water faucets, and plenty of benches! There is also a lovely walkway lined with marble busts of Greek historic figures if you'd like to learn a bit of contemporary history while you're there!

Picnic lunch with view of the Acropolis

Philopappos Hill
@emmaeichhorn
I consider this place a must when visiting Athens! For it's stunning view of the Acropolis as well as the central role it has played in Greek history. The hill itself is full of historical significance, with the Prison of Socrates, the Philopappos Monument, and about a dozen pockets a ancient ruins marked all over the grounds. Additionally, this hill is alive with current cultural significance, being the home of the Holy Church of Saint Demetrios Loumbardiaris, the most popular spot for kite flying every year on Καθαρά Δευτέρα (Clean Monday), and my personal favorite spot to watch the Easter fireworks!

Shopping and Exploring the City Center

Afternoon runAthens boasts a running and cycling path that is on its way to connecting the far north and of the city to the picturesque coastline in the south. I personally recommend the portion that begins a Thiseio metro station, heading east on Eptachalkou st. The street will curve south and join a red path marching for runners and cyclists at the intersection of Thessalonikis St. and Persefonis St. From there you can easily follow the path to the coast!

Once you arrive at Poseidon Ave. you can catch the tram at Kallithea tram station and return to the center, or continue you run westward toward the Stavros Niarchos Cultural Center.

This place is so unique and an excellent non-touristy option to add to your itinerary! The park itself has so many cool features and the SNF is always changing up the attractions offered to those visiting the grounds. The outdoor space consists of all native plant species, giving it an authentic look, different from other parks in Athens. The cultural center included on the grounds offers a variety of activities and houses the National Library and National Opera House. After you've had a nice walk, you can pop in to the cafe for a drink and enjoy it beside the canal or walk up the green roof for views of the city and the port!

Book Garden
@emmaeichhorn
This is one of my ultimate Happy Places and certainly my favorite place in Athens to look for books! The selection has great variety, plenty of English and Greek books, as well as other languages, covering all genres. The ladies who run the shop are truly wonderful people and all sales proceeds go to a reputable and meaningful organization supporting at risk women!

Marathon Expo

The Marathon expo will be open for several days, and when you visit is flexible. You will receive an official schedule from the Marathon Organization via email in the week leading up to the race.

That email will also include option for traveling to the expo venue. It is my personal recommendation to drive or get an uber, but bus and tram options are available, if you are willing to spend the time.

Sunset

Depending on how much leg work you are wanting for this day, the summit of Lycabettus is reachable by both walking paths and a funicular.

The walking options range from a direct assent on a paved pathway with switchbacks and staircases interspersed, a variety of nature trails that explore the surrounding hill The Funicular provides a quick ride to the top, costing 7 euro one way or 10 round trip.

There is a cafe at the top where you can enjoy a drink and take in the view from the highest point in Athens!

Day 8

Marathon Day

The Authentic Marathon is a huge operation, and when you arrive in Athens, you might a feel a bit unsure of where to go or what to do the morning of race day. I highly recommend spending some time with a member of the information team at the Marathon Expo to get all your questions answered and your nerves calmed!The information team is highly knowledgeable and can provide you with information sheets, walk you through the large wall maps at the venue, and ensure that when Sunday morning you know exactly where to go and what to expect!

It is also my personal recommendation to wear a warm outer layer that you will not be sad to part with for the ride to Marathon Village and during your warm up period. You will want to have something on in the crisp morning air, and donation bins will be available to leave your extra layers before you start running.
