Netherlands Coffee
Netherlands Coffee
Cara Paliakas
A guide to the many roasters and cafés of the Hague and Amsterdam!
Upon arriving in the Netherlands for the first time, I had no idea what to expect when it came to coffee (and little did I know the treat I was in for). The following 2.5 months was filled with creamy lattes, perfectly crafted cortados, and an array of uniquely roasted single-origin coffees that I'll never forget. Here is my guide to navigating the incredible coffee scene of the Netherlands!

The Hague
Lot 61 Coffee Roasters
Perron X Coffee (Coffee by LOT61)
@carapal
Lot 61 happened to be one of the first cafés I found in the Hague, and it quickly became my absolute favorite. It transformed into more of a second home for me than just a café. It has a warm and cozy interior with a lovely outdoor patio as well! They had good wifi, a free water tap, and loads of different pastries and other food items. Their espresso drinks are consistently fantastic (with impeccable latte art), and they had a rotating selection of unique single-origin coffees for pour-overs. I cannot say enough good things about Lot 61, I miss it every day.
(p.s. they have a location in Amsterdam too!)

Single Estate Coffee Roasters
Single Estate Coffee Roasters
@carapal
If you're somewhat of a coffee nerd, and love finding cafés where the baristas have lots of knowledge to share -- then Single Estate Coffee Roasters is the place for you! I was blown away upon my first visit. I knew that I wanted a pour-over, but they had FIVE different options (which is unheard of) so, I was in need of some direction. The barista taking my order was the exact person for the job -- they knew so much about each of the coffee offerings they had,
(p.s. they have rules about not using laptops at certain tables/on certain days of the week, so, if you're a remote worker this may not be the most conveinent place for you)

Bookstor Cafe
THE Bookstor Cafe
@carapal
If I had to give an average tourist only *one* café to go to when visiting the Hague, then I would without a doubt recommend the Bookstor Café! It was the first place I brought my family when they came out to visit me, and the place my friends and I always found ourselves returning to. It's a book store and a café all in one! What's not to love! They have a decent pastry selection and wonderful espresso drinks. However, I would say it's less about the quality of the coffee served and more about the ambiance! You're definitely paying for the experience, and you won't be disappointed. There is a variety of seating, books stacked everywhere, soothing lamps/alternative lighting, and art! My personal favorite spot to sit is the back patio. There are plants sprawling all around, creating the most picturesque landscape. If you want some cute pictures, you'll get them here!
(p.s. they don't have a menu anywhere in the café, you'll have to ask the barista taking your order any menu questions you may have)

Filtro
Filtro // Speciality Coffee and Lunch Bar
@carapal
Here's another recommendation for my coffee geeks, Filtro Coffee Bar! They roast their own coffee so you can expect a unique selection of drinks offered and coffee beans for sale. Which make a lovely gift for yourself and others. They also have a pretty expanded food menu, so if you're craving a little more than just a pastry, Filtro is the place for you! They have a small patio out front, and inside they've created a cozy and inviting environment.

Lola Bikes & Coffee
Lola Bikes & Coffee
@carapal
Netherlands = biking
We all know the stereotype, and guess what, it's true! So, you shouldn't be surprised that there is a bike themed café in the Hague. They have created a lovely space here that feels like it embodies everything that the Netherlands is!
(p.s. it's also an actual bike shop! where you can get repairs done)

Pistache Café
Pistache Café
@carapal
Looking for a place to grab breakfast, brunch, or lunch with your friends and family, then make your way over to Pistache café. They have a food and beverage menu with a lot of options (which you can easily find on their website). The first time I went I was wishing I came to grab a meal because all of the food looked divine. The ambiance is lovely, because who doesn't love the color green?
(p.s. they also have options for alcohol beverages later in the day)

Barista Cafe
Barista Cafe Frederikstraat
@carapal
When it comes to the Barista Café, I wouldn't recommend it if you're *really* into coffee; however, if you want a cute place to sit and do some work or catch up with a friend, then it will do just fine! It's not a specialty coffee shop by any means (when I ordered a cortado they asked me if I wanted a small or large...) but they have a wide variety of beverages, and like I said, a cozy and cute place to spend a morning or afternoon.

Anne&Max
Anne&Max Den Haag Kerkplein
@carapal
Anne & Max is more of a breakfast restaurant, but they serve a variety of coffee drinks as well! If you're looking for more of a meal to pair with your coffee, then this place is perfect. I went here with my friends who weren't as into specialty coffee, because it's casual and they have loads of options! What's not to love! They have an outdoor patio for seating and lots inside as well, so it's easy to find a table. I loved sitting outside and people watching :)

Coffee-Star (Central Library)
Coffee-star
@carapal
So, this is technically a café inside the Hague's central library, but I spent so much time at this location how could I not include it! I loved going to the library to sit and read, journal, or just spend some quiet time alone. And since they had a café inside, I found myself returning more often than I anticipated. It's reliable, cheap, and straightforward. There are better café's out there, but I believe this one serves a different purpose, and it's important nonetheless.

Amsterdam
Saint Jean
SAINT-JEAN Bakery
@carapal
So, yes this is a bakery, but believe me when I say it also has some of the best coffee in Amsterdam! Saint Jean is my favorite a bakery and café that I visited while in Amsterdam -- I still dream about the pastries I got there! They are all made from scratch and are 100% plant-based! Additionally, for their coffee drinks they use beans from Dak roasters. I cannot say enough good things about this place -- if you visit Amsterdam, you HAVE to give Saint Jean a visit.
(p.s. you HAVE to try their cruffins (croissant muffins) they are heavenly)

Uncommon
Uncommon Amsterdam
@carapal
Specialty coffee heaven! Uncommon has a sleek and minimalistic interior, leaving room for only what's necessary -- high quality coffee. This is an excellent option if you are roaming around Amsterdam and need a break from all the walking and sightseeing! They serve top notch beverages, so this is another place for all my fellow coffee nerds

Lebkov & Sons
Lebkov & Sons Zuidas
@carapal
This is another coffee chain you'll find throughout the Netherlands that is tasty and reliable! I went to the location in the Utrecht Centraal Station and it had loads of options for me as I waited for my train to arrive. Lebkov & Sons is a great place to find a consistently good cup of coffee, a latte, or a pastry!

30 mL, Leiden
30ml Leiden
@carapal
Leiden happens to be my favorite city in the Netherlands, so I had to include my favorite café from my favorite city! 30ml offers an array of coffee drinks and a full breakfast/lunch menu. So it's the perfect spot for a café date, late lunch with friends or family, catching up with an old friend over breakfast, the list goes on! The oat milk latte I got here was one of the creamiest I've ever had. They have a little something for everyone on their menu, so get a drink and some food, sit back, and enjoy the views from inside their cozy café or out on the patio overlooking the canal.

La Maru, Haarlem
La Maru | Coffee & Bread
@carapal
Another location that is a bakery AND a café -- there's nothing better! I had an outstanding pain au chocolat and cappuccino here. There were so many other drinks and pastries I wanted to try, it was so hard to chose! The atmosphere they created inside is warm and inviting. I couldn't recommend more if you're visiting Haarlem.
