A Day Trip to Salzburg!

A Day Trip to Salzburg!

Shelly Lives
Hey there! Here’s a map featuring the places you can visit in Salzburg! While there are plenty of things to do in Salzburg, these are the ones I managed to fit into a day trip, keeping it simple and light, as the journey itself can be quite tiring. Enjoy!

Things to do:

Mirabellgarten
@shellylives
Mirabellgarten was our first stop as we left the train station and headed toward the historic center. Entry to these stunning gardens is completely free (and I believe the palace is free as well, if I’m not mistaken)! From the gardens, you get a breathtaking view of the Festung Hohensalzburg.

Altstadt Salzburg
@shellylives
Altstadt is Salzburg’s city center. It’s the place to go for souvenir shopping, food, coffee, and, of course, to visit Salzburg’s Cathedral and Mozart’s birthplace!

FestungsBahn
@shellylives
The FestungsBahn is the funicular that takes you up to the fortress. The path up is long and steep, so if you’re not very fit, you might need to take several breaks or opt for the funicular. The cost is around €15 per person, which includes admission to the entire fortress. If you only want to pay for the funicular ride to enjoy the views at the top, you’ll need to wait until the fortress is closed.

Fortress Hohensalzburg
@shellylives
Since this was a day trip and my travel buddy wasn’t very interested in museums, we decided not to walk up to the fortress just for the views—although they were incredible. As I mentioned in the FestungsBahn note, you can take a funicular ride up to the fortress for around €15 per person, which includes the entry fee to the fortress.

Salzburg Cathedral
@shellylives
Personally, I always make it a point to visit the main cathedral of any city I’m exploring. Salzburg’s cathedral might not be as distinct or stunning on the inside, but its exterior is quite unique, towering above the other buildings in the city center!

Coffee and Food

Café Mozart
@shellylives
Mozart’s Café is located in the city center and is a very busy spot! I highly recommend reserving a table in advance. The café is cozy yet elegant, with waiters dressed in suits. Unfortunately, we didn’t realize a reservation was needed, so we weren’t able to find a table.

Restaurant Meissl & Schadn Salzburg
@shellylives
This was a fantastic schnitzel! It was a bit pricey—we paid around €35 for each combination: veal schnitzel, potato salad, and two dips (cranberry sauce and a herb-and-anchovy dip). Totally worth it, though!

Guides:

Vienna, a city renowned for its stunning Baroque architecture, rich imperial history, and as the home of Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven, and many other great composers, is often called the "City of Music." Having visited Vienna twice, once in summer and once in autumn, and experiencing two distinct travel styles, I believe I can provide useful information for travelers. During my summer trip, I focused on the "sightseeing and museums" type of travel. In contrast, my autumn trip was more relaxed, with day trips to Salzburg and Hallstatt, while ensuring that the person accompanying me got to experience some must-sees based on their personal preferences. She is a nature lover and not particularly interested in historical museums. The guide includes some do's and don'ts, along with a list of must-visit places. In addition, this guide provides practical tips on transportation, ticketing, and the best times to visit major attractions. I'll also include some of my favorite spots to eat, from cozy cafés to traditional Viennese restaurants, budget friendly tips and days needed to explore this beautiful city! I discuss what you can expect to see and experience at each site, based on my own personal experience, while striving to remain objective. This way, you, as the reader, can choose the places that best suit your preferences and add them to your itinerary. I won’t just write about the history of each place—after all, that's likely the reason you're visiting in the first place, right? Feel free to share your own experiences or ask any questions. I'd love to help make your trip to Vienna as memorable as mine! This guide will continue to be updated every time I visit Vienna and gain new experiences to share with you! Enjoy!
