Morning

Piazza del Duomo and Fontana dell'Elefante

Start your day at Piazza del Duomo, the heart of Catania. Here, you’ll find the Fontana dell’Elefante, a symbol of the city. This iconic statue, a black lava stone elephant, represents the resilience of Catania.

Fountain of the Elephant
@andrearizzo
Legend has it that many many years ago, Sicily was inhabited by small elephants and one of those send away wild animals allowing humans to found what is now Catania. As a gesture of gratitude, this statue was made. Catanese people refer to this statue as "u' Liotru" which (according to a legend) comes from Eliodoro. This man tried to become bishop of Catania, but failed. So he decided to become a magician and it is said that it was him who built the elephant and he used to ride on it when traveling to Costantinople.

Roman Theatre

A short walk away, visit the Roman Theatre and Odeon, where you can explore ancient Roman ruins right in the middle of the city.

This theater dates back to the 2nd century and has fascinating views and glimpses into Catania’s historical layers.

The entrance is a bit overpriced in respect to the experience. Still, if you have never been in an ancient theatre, it might be an interesting experience.

While there is a train station nearby called "Catania Aeroporto" that can be reached by foot or by a shuttle bus, the easiest way to get to the city centre or to your hotel is by "Alibus" or by taxi.

In fact the airport's train station comes convenient only if you are to reach other city in Sicily by train. If you were to choose the train you have to be sure that you have bought the bus+train ticket. In fact buying a ticket to Catania Aeroport only doesn't include the shuttle bus to the airport terminal and you have to pay for the extra ticket or walk (600 mt.)

Furthermore, while the shuttle bus runs every 10 minutes, trains runs less often.

That is why I suggest you to opt for the "Alibus" which runs every 25 minutes and can get you to Catania centre faster.

Here all the info:

Bus and Taxis

The city centre can be visited by foot easily.

To travel around the city you can use public transportations. More info at:

Alternatively you can hail a taxi or use those apps:

- appTaxi

- Uber ( use this code: d7brtqc27buw )

- Freenow
