A day in Catania
Morning
Piazza del Duomo and Fontana dell'Elefante
Start your day at Piazza del Duomo, the heart of Catania. Here, you’ll find the Fontana dell’Elefante, a symbol of the city. This iconic statue, a black lava stone elephant, represents the resilience of Catania.
Duomo di Sant'Agata
Right on Piazza del Duomo, this Baroque cathedral dedicated to Saint Agatha is a must-visit. Admire the impressive architecture and spend a moment inside to appreciate the frescoes and sculptures.
This cathedral also houses the tomb of Vincenzo Bellini, the famous Italian composer from Catania.
Fish Market
Just behind the cathedral, this bustling market is an incredible experience.
You’ll see vibrant stalls filled with fresh seafood, produce, and Sicilian specialties.
Take in the atmosphere and maybe grab a quick snack.
Midday
Roman Theatre
A short walk away, visit the Roman Theatre and Odeon, where you can explore ancient Roman ruins right in the middle of the city.
This theater dates back to the 2nd century and has fascinating views and glimpses into Catania’s historical layers.
Via Crociferi
Take a stroll along this elegant street, famous for its Baroque churches and architecture.
Some highlights include the Church of San Benedetto and Church of San Francesco Borgia.
Lunch
For a traditional lunch, head to A Putia dell’Ostello or Ristorante Vuciata near the fish market. Try local specialties like pasta alla Norma (pasta with eggplant, tomatoes, and ricotta) or sarde a beccafico (sardines stuffed with breadcrumbs and raisins).
Afternoon
Castello Ursino
Head to Castello Ursino, a medieval fortress built in the 13th century by Frederick II. It’s now a museum, housing collections of art, artifacts, and sculptures. The castle also offers insight into the various cultures that have influenced Sicily over the centuries.
Villa Bellini
Spend a bit of time unwinding in this lush park. Villa Bellini is one of Italy’s oldest urban parks and offers a peaceful escape. Stroll among fountains, statues, and shaded pathways – it’s a great place to relax and recharge.
Pasticceria Savia
If you want a final treat before leaving, stop by Pasticceria Savia for some delicious Sicilian pastries like cannoli or cassata (a traditional Sicilian cake). Their arancini are also well-known and a nice way to end your day.
Late Afternoon
Via Etnea
End your day with a walk down Via Etnea, Catania’s main shopping street. This street is lined with shops, cafés, and bakeries where you can enjoy a coffee or traditional Sicilian cannoli. The views of Mount Etna from here are stunning, especially as the sun begins to set.
Aperitivo or Dinner Ideas
If you have still time to enjoy a spritz or a full dinner, here some ideas.

Transportation
Airport
While there is a train station nearby called "Catania Aeroporto" that can be reached by foot or by a shuttle bus, the easiest way to get to the city centre or to your hotel is by "Alibus" or by taxi.
In fact the airport's train station comes convenient only if you are to reach other city in Sicily by train. If you were to choose the train you have to be sure that you have bought the bus+train ticket. In fact buying a ticket to Catania Aeroport only doesn't include the shuttle bus to the airport terminal and you have to pay for the extra ticket or walk (600 mt.)
Furthermore, while the shuttle bus runs every 10 minutes, trains runs less often.
That is why I suggest you to opt for the "Alibus" which runs every 25 minutes and can get you to Catania centre faster.
Here all the info:
Bus and Taxis
The city centre can be visited by foot easily.
To travel around the city you can use public transportations. More info at:
