""It is located exactly a few meters from Piazza del Duomo, under the ancient walls of Palazzo dei Chierici, near the Fountain of the Seven Canals. And already when you are near the famous elephant monument in Catania, you can recognize the unmistakable voice of the fishmongers and the buzz of the buyers.
Colors, smells, flavors and a breath of Sicilian folklore welcome citizens, travelers and anyone who wants to know the city because to be honest, beyond the sea, the monuments and the characteristic streets of Catania, the Historic Firsh Market is the truest soul of the territory.
A place full of local history and culture that has remained untouched by technology and modernity, where it seems that time has never passed.
Whoever stays at the counter to bargain with buyers is not just a seller, but a true craftsperson who has made the art of haggling they inherited from the Arabs their own. And it is no coincidence that today this market is considered one of the most irresistible places for those arriving in the area in the shadow of Etna.
A place where the stalls full of the catch of the day alternate with stalls with seasonal fruit and vegetables, kiosks where you can quench your thirst or order street food; a place in which to get lost and immerse yourself in the tales of fishmongers, anecdotes and advice on cooking, a noisy, authentic and dynamic merchant that transforms itself at any time of day, but which always remains true to itself.
And this mixture of noises, smells and colors, kidnaps anyone who happens to pass through Catania because it is here that the truest and most authentic Sicilian character is preserved."

"This is a traditional fish market near Piazza del Duomo and it has a vibrant and authentic Sicilian feel.
I still remember when my father would bring me along as a kid to eat 'sangeli' from the big pots and choose the best fish.
PS: Sangeli is a traditional Sicilian blood sausage which is now a rare find in pescheria, or in general, as the states are changing with the new generations.
If you do go to Pescheria, I would highly recommend wearing closed shoes (no white) as the shop owners throw water at the fish and it can become quite challenging to keep your feet dry.
In the last few years, they've added some colourful umbrellas and many pubs and restaurants decided to open in this area, so it's nice to discover it during the evening as well. "

"The fish market, or pescheria, is a bustling and vibrant hub of activity in the city's historic center, a feast for the senses, with vendors selling a dizzying array of fresh seafood, swordfish, squid, octopus, shrimp, and more.
The market's lively atmosphere is infectious, with vendors calling out their wares and bargaining with customers. You can also find a variety of other local produce and goods, such as fruits, vegetables, cheese and spices.
The fish market is not only a popular destination for foodies but also a significant cultural and social gathering place for locals, definitely a must-visit if you are looking to experience the city's vibrant culture and cuisine."
