Southern Izu(南伊豆) / Shimoda(下田)

Satoyama no Bettei Shimoda Central Hotel
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: More elaborate rooms than we were in are available with private outdoor baths and small gardens. The room maid told us that the water for the baths in the rooms was from the same hot spring that fed the Grand Bath. I can an recommend the hotel for a nice and relaxing day or two away from the clatter and clamor or Tokyo. But be aware it is well out into the country so plan on entertaining yourself if that is what you are looking for.

Seiryuso
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: We spent 4 nights at Inn Seiryuso in August 2016. This ryokan although no as luxurious as Hiragiya in Kyoto, has all the charm and excellent traditional service of a real Japanese inn. We stayed in a Japanese deluxe with private onsen n° 103 which was really gorgeous apart from (it seems) having hosted President Carter on his viti to Shimoda back in 1979!!! The room is large with traditional tatami and a wonderful private open air rock onsen!!! Meals area traditionally served in you room both dinner and breakfast by our room attendants (we had two who shifted) which were both really nice. Most personnel do not speak much English but were care after wonderful Ms. Aya, one of the managers, who took care of us from our reservation process till waving goodbye on our departure!!!!

Kannon Onsen
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: The hotel is tucked away in a hilly location about 25mins drive away from Izukyu shimoda station. We have booked a basic room with attached bathroom but were upgraded to a room with a private hotspring bath. The onsen and dinner is the best I have had. They have two onsens - the onsen located at the outdoor pavilion away from the main building opens from 11am to 5pm while the other onsen located within the main building is open from 7pm to 11am. Both onsens are very nice, the indoor onsen area also have high ceiling and the temperature of the onsen is just right for onsen newbie like me ( meaning it is not too hot even for the indoor onsen). From a poster, we noted that the hotel onsen is ranked top 28th onsen in 2014.

Fugaku Gunjo
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: A beautifully conceptualized 8 room ryokan perched on a hill. The quiet elegance of this place is really so serene you think you are in heaven. The room is about 1000 sq ft and the terrace with an open air onsen is 300 sq ft. The magic lies in the bay right off the lawn in front of your terrace and Mt Fuji rising so majestically right in front of you whilst you relax on the terrace or in the onsen. Indeed magical!

Hana No Kumo-all rooms with open-air bath
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: I stayed for a birthday trip and was completely amazed. The location is good. Same station as the suspension bridge which is beautiful. You can also easily access Shaboten Koen and Mount Omuro. The staff was so kind! They called us a taxi, checked bus times, gave us umbrellas for a surprising storm, and offered to take our picture in front of the door. The room was amazing and the bath was perfect! The view from our room was actually better than any of the pictures could show. And the food. Oh my god the food. So good. Well worth the price.

Musouan Biwa
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: Visited July 2010 and Nov 2010. Biwa is one of those modern ryokans with the jazz playing in the common areas. The taste of the furniture in the lobby and in the rooms are quite unique and tasteful. Both of the times we were there, we got the nice living room in the first floor and bedroom on the second floor. We got the in-room massage where the masseuse brought the beds into our living room. It was not that impressive of the massage but was relaxing.

BEAUTY & SPA RESORT IZU 頬杖の刻 -HOOZUE NO TOKI-
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: This is a small onsen hotel with only 10 rooms. Every room has a private onsen sited in a sea view balcony where you can embrace the sunset while enjoying the onsen. Do check the sunset time and check in to the hotel well ahead. This hotel is located in the middle of nowhere. The nearest civilization is 10 min drive away. This is a good place to relax in the onsen with perfect quietness (occasionally with a few cars passing by), feel the sea breeze and listen to the sea waves. Unlike most of the other onsen hotels, this one is more western. They serve western dinner and breakfast.

Futaritowani En
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: It's a hotel that's for couple because it's very quite and no kid allowed. Cuisine in here is excellent. Fresh sashimi, seafood from local. There is nothing to criticise. Room is big and can see Fuji San when the sky is clear enough. The only thing to comment is the security. You can access the room from the parking lot without passing through the main entrance. Therefore have to take my handbag with me for dining.

Kazenokaori UMI
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: Visited this hotel in late September "off season". Unlike some of the mega hotels in the area, this one is very quiet with very few large rooms with great ovean views and a out bath that also has an excellent view of the ocean. All rooms have large balconies facing the ocean and as I was jetlagged, I got an excellent view of the sun rising from my balcony. They have 2 baths, one an out bath facing the ocean (see photo) and another larger interior one. As I used this hotel in the offseason, I did not meet a single soul in either bath and I went 4 times during my stay.

Akazawa Geihinkan
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: In the photo of the room when I made the reservation, it was a room with an open-air bath facing a private garden on the first floor, but it was a corner room on the second floor. However, on the contrary, I thought it was good to feel the sky expand and be freed from the pressure. The balcony with the open-air bath was spacious and perfect for taking photos. The open-air bath filled with 100% deep ocean water was large enough for a family of four to have a great time without feeling cramped. The luxurious interior and spacious and luxurious wash basin area were also great. The mattress-like bed was also large enough for three adults to sleep on. The best thing about it was the customer service and food. After entering the building, I received a welcome drink on a sofa overlooking the Japanese garden in the lobby and completed the reception process.

Mizumari
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: Where to begin? There was so much to love about Mizumari. The location right near the seven Kawazu falls is beautiful. A short hike brings you past each waterfall. The food is extravagant- dinner was seven courses I believe and breakfast was four or five courses- possibly more but we were full and happy. The rooms have private onsens overlooking a picturesque creek. All of this should give any traveler enough reasons to stay there but what delighted us most was the incredible service. They took such excellent care of us and were so friendly. I enjoyed speaking with the staff as they patiently explained every feature of the hotel and every delicious dish they served. Everything is included with your stay- want a beer? go for it. Want more to eat? It's on the way. I can't say enough nice things about this place.

Central Izu(中伊豆)

Yagyu No Sho
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: After 10 days of exploration in Tokyo, Kyoto and Ōsaka often walking 7 miles plus this was a godsend. Some choose to relax upon arriving; we chose to relax upon departing. While Izu might be a bit farther out of the way than Hakone; it was my intent to venture farther. It was a good decision. Our attendant was outstanding; while apologizing for her limited English she conveyed perfectly her hospitality and offered kind direction at every step. She helped me understand roles and rituals when I felt lost as well as direct us in the understanding of everything that was served. The meals were beyond expectations as was the hospitality.

Kikuya Ryokan
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: We stayed in a room with a private bath on a balcony overlooking the river, and it could not have been better. This part of the hotel was recently built, and the room had a bedroom, living room a shower entrance to the balcony. Everything seemed brand new, with a modern Japanese design. Our room even came with free drinks like beer, chuhai, etc…The rest of the hotel was, a combination of older Ryokans that have been connected with modern hallways with a nice design flair. There is a beautiful garden with a pond in the middle of them all. Many of the original features including glass windows and old wooden window frames overlooking the garden and other traditional Japanese architecture has been renovated and made classically charming. I cannot speak for those rooms, but the one we had was extremely good.

We enjoyed most of the food, particularly the soups, cooked fish dishes, and both Japanese and Western breakfasts, and our meals were beautifully and thoughtfully prepared. Ochiairo

Example Reviews: We had the most wonderful time at Ochiairo! I came here for a birthday trip with my husband and best friend and we stayed in the spacious Aofuji room overlooking the river. The spatial arrangement offered more than enough space and privacy for 3 people and probably 2 couples or a family and kids. The white noise lulled us to sleep every night and it was simply magical. The megalithic bath here was a masterpiece. I loved it so much that I went there many times. Although the inside of the hotel is old, it has a clean feel to it. This time I stayed in a room facing the river, but the garden was so beautiful that I would like to stay in a room facing the garden next time. At the end, all the staff saw me off, which made me feel very warm. thank you very much.

Sanyo-so
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: This inn used to be the summer home of a very wealthy merchant, founder of the modern Mitsubishi group. It is huge, with a number of old wooden buildings which are joined in a tasteful way by modern corridors and newer buildings. Our room was enormous with a view over what must be the most beautiful view of any inn in Japan. The bath which draws water from a natural hot spring is very nice, without being luxurious. Breakfast and dinner is taken in a separate dining area and the food on the whole is very good. The staff were very responsive and were committed to making our stay comfortable.

Arcana Izu
@ambertanaka
Example Reviews: We returned to Arcana a mere seven months after our first stay... that in itself says something, because we rarely - if ever - visit the same place twice. The property itself is in a stunning locations, and all rooms feature picturesque views of the river and valley below and the mountain and forests beyond. The rooms are comfortable, and all of them have their own Onsen hot springs bath. It's all good when staying here, but it doesn't stand out when compared to other top-flight luxury ryokans in Japan (and even the Izu area.) The reason to stay here is for the food.

The meals here were exquisite and in many cases, better than $200 omakase experiences in Kyoto and Tokyo. Although most of the staff do not speak English, this was no problem at all and we were able to effectively communicate.
