Local food

Assam Laksa

Penang Road Famous Laksa
@jolies
This place is in the michelin guide! One of the best laksas around but just be mindful of the crowd timings. There aren't many seats so plan your time wisely. The prawn omelette is not a must-eat. Price: $

Laksa Mana
@jolies
Pretty solid place. You can to try both types of Laksa (Coconut and Assam). The ambience is great but it might be expensive to some. They have other food as well and is halal. A great place if you are coming with friends and you can order more food to share. Price: $$

Stir-fry noodles and raddish cakes

Siam Road Charcoal Char Kuey Teow
@jolies
Super cool place where you see the chef cooking one dish by one dish! That's also why the waiting times would be super long. It is definitely worth the try if you have some spare hours to queue. The chicken wing is not amazing and tastes pretty much like IKEA's. Price: $

Perak Road Night Char Koay Teow
@jolies
One of the best in Penang! No tables and just a store front, just an old uncle frying Char Kuay Teow (Char Koay Teow) over charcoal along the roadside! To dine in, just sit on the stools, hold your plate and feast! Price: $

Sister Yao's Char Koay Kak
@jolies
Solid place. This coffee shop has other food as well so you can try some decent Hokkien Mee and other food while waiting for the big-sized radish cakes. Unlike Singapore's, you taste the radish cake for what is it. The black sauce is not as sweet as Singapore's and the sweetness comes from the pickled vegetables and the bean sprouts. Price: $

Chendol

Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendul (Roadside)
@jolies
Very solid Chendol. In the very hot summers of Penang, one slurp of this icy sweet chendol puts you on the tip of your tippty toes. Fresh red beans too. Be careful though, since the cart is by the road side. You can buy it and walk further down to enjoy the Chendol if you need to. Unless you have a huge sweet tooth, I would suggest to share it among 2-3 people. Price: $

Nyonya/ Peranakan Food

Jason Nyonya House
@jolies
Fresh beluak! Their barley was also very fresh. The portion was big and when we ordered sambal kang kong (spicy vegetables), it felt like we were served a garden on a plate. Hate to say though, the chilli they had was incomparable to my Grandmother's but it was decent nonetheless - I'm biased. Price: $

CEKI Nyonya Restaurant
@jolies
The buah keluak chicken was decent, though it leaned more toward a Southern cooking style found in Melaka. The portion was generous but it might be expensive for many. Unfortunately, the fried ngo hiang was disappointing; the skin was lumpy and should have been crispier. The special fried rice was rich with herbs, but I would recommend plain rice to avoid the dishes overpowering its flavor. The Assam prawn worth a try. Price: $$

Hokkien Mee

888 Hokkien Mee
@jolies
Some say that this tastes better than 888 Hokkien mee. The prawn soup tasted fresh and sweet and ingredient portions were fairly huge. Price wise, it was fairly reasonable because you can have additional toppings with just a minor extra cost. The restaurant was located near Komtar. Parking is also by the side of the road. Price: $

五福 炭香福建蝦面·鹵面 Wufoo Hokkien Prawn Noodle·Lor Mee
@jolies
Their Hokkien Mee, equivalent to Singapore's Prawn Noodles, has very fresh soup. The ingredients are also very nice especially the roasted pork, very crispy. Variety of choices if you like add more ingredients to your dish. I prefer to keep locals' old ingredients in my bowl. Somehow you might need to wait if a lot take away orders. On average, wait around 5~18 minutes to get your bowl. Price: $

Wanton Mee

Weng Kei Wantan Mee
@jolies
A very unassuming coffee shop located at a corner. The pork belly skin was crispy and the char siew savoury and flavourful. Their wanton noodles has the right amount of seasoning to the well-cooked noodles. Wantons were succulent and flavourful too. Coffee was very local and thus might be too thick for some. Prices were reasonable considering the taste of the food. Price: $

Fried Oyster Omelette

3888 Fried Oyster
@jolies
The oyster omelette has a taste of wok hei and its oysters are fresh, soft and juicy. Friendly stall owner too! Large size for 21RM, totally worth it. Price: $

Duck

Kimberley Street Duck Kway Chap
@jolies
Big bowl generously filled with ingredients! The Soup Broth has a Very Rich Braised Piggy Taste, like a Very Deep Robust and Sweetish Broth. There are No Traces of Herbal, this is Purely a Dark Sauce Braised Pork-Based Soup. The Kway is the Completely Different from the Kway Chap we have in Singapore.

Coffee

Oriental Kopi @ Gurney Plaza
@jolies
One of the standout items here is their famous egg tart. It lives up to its reputation with its deliciously flaky pastry and creamy filling. The coffee is equally impressive, offering a rich and satisfying taste that complements the food perfectly. They sell packets where you can buy home as well! For those who enjoy a bit of spice, the sambal served with the fried rice is notably flavoursome, adding a delightful kick to the dish.The menu boasts a range of tasty options, with most dishes being both delicious and reasonably priced. Portions are generous, making it a good value for money. The overall environment of the restaurant is pleasant and welcoming, making it an ideal spot for a family meal or casual dining experience.Expect to spend around RM20 to RM30 per person, which is quite reasonable considering the quality of the food and the overall dining experience. In summary, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. The combination of tasty food, friendly service, and a comfortable atmosphere makes it a great choice for a satisfying meal.

Ome by Spacebar Coffee
@jolies
Great service! They make you feel you are taken care of even within the limited 1 hour dinning time (when it's getting crowded) Very pleasant atmosphere. Friendly and relaxing atmosphere. Very good coffee. The banana cake can be desirable for many since it is not too sweet and moist.

Nasser Roti Canai

This is a street stall that sells crispy roti canai. Prices start from RM1.50 for roti kosong and more for telur, bawang or sardine. The sambal which comes with a load of anchovies that goes with the dhal is heavenly.

Mixed cuisines

Communal Table by Gēn 根
@jolies
The fried rice and desserts are the most recommended, while the other dishes to be average, though the presentation was excellent. Personally, this restaurant seems to be more suitable for couples, as the tables are long and arranged in a row, making it difficult to have a conversation. Price: $$$

Restaurant Blanc Penang
@jolies
All the food served was delicious & the presentation was exquisite. It's so eye-catching & some look too beautiful to be eaten. A mix of french and asian cuisine. The degustation menu was created by Michelin Chef Benny Yeoh. Food were created with a fusion of local ingredients, local flavours and French culinary style has resulted in these astonishing dishes, full of flavours and surprises. Price: $$$

Experience

Restaurant au Jardin
@jolies
Very solid experience. I would recommend this as the cost is so much less than experiences in many other countries/ cities. The food was really fabulous and if you take the counter seats, you get to see the chefs preparing your food. By the way, don't take the bread more than once - they would offer - because despite the butter and bread being one of the best things on the menu, the rest of the courses will make you full. @jolies
A beautiful and elegant dining experience. The ambiance was spot on. The food was impressive—each dish had a story, and you could tell they put thought into every detail. Each dish had locally sourced produce and elevating it into something special. One of the highlights is that you can be allowed into the kitchen. Price: $$$
