Quick ferry ride from Halifax. A couple record shops and some great places to eat, mostly centered on Portland St. Can take the ferry from Halifax>Alderney, shop and have a bite, then walk 35 mins along the water and take the ferry back to Halifax from Woodside. Make sure to bring exact change in CAD for the ferry.

Skyline Trail
@OutandAboutwGandL
This is THE hike to do in the area. It’s super accessible for families and anyone who prefers a flatter surface. Plenty of parking. The entire trail is wide and either gravel or well-maintained boardwalk. Suggest doing the loop counter clockwise for better views on the way out. An incredibly scenic walk. The view from the spur is incredible. Took us less than two hours with not much stopping. We got started before 9 on a Friday and it wasn’t too crowded but it was definitely getting more busy as we were leaving.

Gros Morne Mountain Hiking Trail

Well maintained trail with some elevation but not super steep during the approach part. We walked about 2.7 miles and turned around to return before the split to do the climb. Beautiful views toward the end of the approach and several waterfalls along the way.

North Head Trail
@OutandAboutwGandL
Love this trail! Super scenic and mostly easy footing (though lots of stairs!). Go clockwise from the signal hill top for a mostly down walk. Go counter clockwise from battery street to go mostly up all the way to the top of signal hill. Take some time to stop and enjoy the views. Bonus for timing a walk when a big ship is going through the narrows.

Easy to hike/walk here from signal hill/st John’s. Very charming little town on the water with some food trucks and a little artisan mall. A brewery or two that have tables in the water. Easily access the sugarloaf trail from here. It’s an out and back, moderate to hard hike/walk.

Marine Atlantic - Channel-Port aux Basques Ferry Terminal
@OutandAboutwGandL
Took the ferry to/from Sydney-Port au Basques. Book a berth, it’s worth it. Ask for a window/outter berth either on the phone or when getting boarding docs. If none are available, call and get added to the waitlist. It seems like they come up often. Cafe wasn’t bad and there’s plenty of space to walk around, go up on deck during the crossing. Did not do overnight but imagine it would be just fine if you had a berth.

Got the tasting menu and sat on the Terrasse. Liked being outside as it felt a bit more casual than the dining room. Food was fantastic and interesting. Got the special cocktail to start and it was fabulous. Maybe a little expensive for what we got but we felt it was totally worth it for the experience and great food.
