My Personal Faves

These are the place I keep going back to.

Le Peloton Café
@hilaryinparis
It's safe to speak English here! Super nice baristas and a very laid-back vibe. Also, my favorite oat milk latte in Paris. ☕️ Allongé 3€ 📶 espresso

Coffee with a rock & roll vibe. They make a great dirty chai here! (Those are hard to find in Paris.)

Kott Café
@hilaryinparis
Truly fantastic coffee. Don't miss this place if you're nearby. Very small interior with a few seats outside too, and in the same courtyard as Chambelland (a famous gluten-free bakery, if you're into that sort of thing). Get the cold brew if you’re there in the summer! ☕️ Allongé €4.50

Café Margo
@hilaryinparis
Wonderful spot near the canal!! Several seats outside, just inside, and two cute alcoves in the back. All day breakfast with the BEST œuf à la coque served with truly incredible homemade butter with mustard and honey (not “honey mustard”, you’ll see what I mean…) Closed on Mondays & Tuesdays! (Annoying) ☕️ Allongé 3€

@hilaryinparis
Such a cute place in a very hip neighborhood (le Marais). Well-known for incredible, vegan-friendly granola bowls, and roules (rolls) with either cinnamon or cardamom. You can't go wrong, but I'm obsessed with the roule cardamom! Trust me on this.

Partisan Café Artisanal
@hilaryinparis
A classic neighborhood cafe on a corner well-suited for people-watching. The windows will be fully open in nice weather and coffee drinkers will sit on a bench lining the outside of the cafe. Partisan has good pastry snacks, as well! This is an artisanal roaster, too, where you can buy beans roasted on site. ☕️ Allongé 3€

Great Cafes

Paris has absolutely exploded with specialty coffee shops post-Covid so there are tons of cafes that I have a lovely experience at but have only had the opportunity (so far) to visit once or twice.

The Caféothèque of Paris
@hilaryinparis
Very cute coffee shop near the Seine with a front room and a back room. Order at the front counter, then take your ticket to the back counter and hand it to the barista and wait for your drink. They serve limited food here (more than just pastries) and it's quite good! Historically, this cafe has had a *very* tenuous relationship with people working on laptops here so their policy changes fairly frequently. As of Dec 2023, laptops are once again NOT allowed. Staff can be a little cranky at times but coffee and ambiance are great. ☕️ Allongé 3.5€ 📶 20162017

@hilaryinparis
Another place that you almost miss if you're not looking for it, this unassuming coffee shop is a great stop. They have good juice here, too. Temporarily closed as of Sep 2023, but keep an eye out for it when it reopens!

Café de la Place
@hilaryinparis
In a neighborhood packed with coffee shops, this one is special because you can sit directly in front of the church while you sip your coffee! They grind the beans fresh before pulling espresso shots so you’re in for a lovely treat! Also, I saw a “noisette-allongé” here for the first time! Espresso shot with just a touch of hot water and milk foam. ☕️Allongé: €2.20 📶chezmalika

A delightful specialty café just a 5 min walk from the Louvre. Great place for people watching if you sit outside! They grind the beans fresh before pulling espresso shots, and the cardamom roules look like they’re to die for! They also sell whole beans (you can ask them to grind them) here. ☕️ Allongé 3.50€

DREAMIN MAN
@hilaryinparis
This is a basically unmarked hole in the wall place in the 11th known for its hōjicha latte. I normally don’t go for tea/matcha flavored things, but I was so intrigued by the description of hōjicha (see below) that I had to try it! It wasn’t my normal order, but I did really enjoy it. Worth a try if you like creative chiffre. FYI: Closed on Sundays. Two locations show up on Google - the other doesn’t appear to be a real coffe shop! From the Internet: “Matcha is made by stone-grinding flat dried tea leaves (Tencha) into a fine green powder. Hōjicha is made by slowly roasting tightly rolled tea leaves, stems, stalks, or twigs.”

RECTO VERSO
@hilaryinparis
In the heart of the Marais just off the lively rue de Bretagne, this relatively new shop (opened February 2023) is very unassuming. Down a quiet side street with essentially no indicators on the outside of what it is, there's space for about 12 to sit inside. Very nice baristas! The baked goods looked incredible (didn't try them). One word of caution: You are paying Marais prices here. I was surprised at the price of an allongé; some of the other drinks seemed more reasonable in comparison though. ☕️ Allongé 4€

@hilaryinparis
Very weird hours, but go if you can! It closes early (3 or 4 pm) and is not open at all Mon/Tues! That said, the place is adorable and I had a *fantastic* Chai latte here. They also have pumpkin spice lattes here through November. And...incredible looking "roules" for a little sweet or savory baked treat.

BUDDY BUDDY 🥜 Nut Butter Coffee Shop
@hilaryinparis
Every-buddy has been RAVING about this place lately! Unique coffee drinks incorporating peanut butter, almond butter, hazelnuts, and more. Yes, they sell peanut butter here too! (This is exciting because pb is not as prevalent or as good here as in the US, generally speaking). Two locations in Paris. My personal opinion/hot take: this doesn’t have cozy coffee shop vibes. It feels a little modern and sterile with all the stainless steel seating and tables. But, the praline mocha was great and the mugs were super cute! I will be back to try more and to buy peanut butter 🥜🧈

DOUCEURS CAPITALES
@hilaryinparis
Super cozy spot (only 10 seats inside), this is perfect for a quiet, serene break. This Australian café several sweet and savory snacks and dishes, including seasonal all day breakfast options (everything is homemade!) As their name has “Douceurs” (sweets) in it, I’d recommend getting something sweet. The scone was delicious! Closed on Mon/Tues (quite awkward for a coffee shop), you can technically pull out your laptop here, but with so few tables I probably wouldn’t, at least for long periods of time. 📶 btz642019 ☕️ allongé €2.5

Certified café
@hilaryinparis
This one is in one of the classic Paris-covered passageways, which makes it a cozy little option to escape the rain! I would describe this not as a "hole in the wall" but as a "slit in the wall". It is a super narrow cafe with no sitting area and only standing area to form a line and order your coffee. They have a few pastries here, but no other food. Specialty code is roasted on site daily! There is seating at the restaurant just across from it... it was empty when we were there and the restaurant was super nice about letting us sit at their tables. If the restaurant is busy though, it will be a grab-and-go vibe (which is honestly not a common vibe for Paris). Grab-and-go vibe also supported by their exclusively paper cups. Even if they are sustainable, this felt weird to me (not my fav). I like cute little coffee cups and mugs (and places to sit). But, if you're on the go in this neighborhood, the coffee is good and it's worth a stop. ☕️ Allonge: 3.7 € One other location in Paris too.

A B-Corp Certified café ! Feels a bit more like a retail shop for coffee beans (I bought some that smell amazing) rather than a cozy café, but they do have some barstool seating and a small sitting area in the back. In the buzzing Sentier neighborhood just a stone's throw from Boneshaker donuts (a must!), you can stop in here for some Italian coffee. I recommend staying "sur place" so you can enjoy their adorable ceramic mugs! But, they do also serve takeaway coffee (somewhat of a rarity in Paris) in cups embellished with their iconic pink logo. Allonge (Americano): 4.3 EUR 6 locations around Paris.

The Coffee
@hilaryinparis
I thought this was a Paris chain... turns out it's a global franchise! They use Brazilian beans and lean into Japanese minimalism and simplicity. There are currently 9 Paris locations at the time of writing (this seems to be going up quickly). Shops feature modern, touch-screen ordering kiosks where you can adjust the number of shots and sweetness levels of your drinks. They have an interesting and compact list of signature drinks that are a nice change from the standard Parisian coffee menu without being overwhelming.

KAPÉ - Café philippin
@hilaryinparis
A Filipino coffee shop! Unique options like an Ube latte or affogato, and “coffee jelly”. I loved my Ubefoggato! “Ube is a purple yam that is native to Southeast Asia and predominantly used in Filipino cuisine. This starchy tuber has a distinct purple-colored flesh that varies in shade and features a nutty, vanilla flavor. It is often used in desserts, from cakes to ice creams, to provide sweetness and color.” - Webstaurant Store

BlackBird Coffee
@hilaryinparis
Wasn’t impressed with this place. Very awkward seating area and I don’t think the coffee was exceptional. I got a caramel drink and it was like an American drink- way too huge and sweet (and served in a pint glass esque situation). Would maybe try a regular coffee next time, but given the weird seating area too I probably won’t be back- too many other good spots nearby!

To Try Next: Hole-in-the-Wall Places

There are more and more "window walk-up"-esque coffee shops in Paris. These have super limited seating (if any) and might not have bathrooms available. It makes them more ideal for coffee on the go... but that is not really a huge thing in Paris! And most of the time, I'm meeting friends to sit and chat so it takes me longer to visit these cafes.

WHITE Coffee
