A Long Weekend in Poland
I had a spectacular long weekend in Poland as the leaves were changing and the fall weather was setting in. Warsaw & Krakow were the perfect destinations for the fall with hearty soups and gorgeous old town squares. A great balance of plentiful fun and dark but important history, Poland was a perfect solo trip destination.
Warsaw
The balance between the modern commercial areas and the old town is a fascinating representation of the history and modernity that exists in Poland.

Polish milkbars (mleczny) are a dream! They are a remnant of the communist era and an affordable cafeteria-style way to familiarize yourself with Polish staples.

Krakow
Krakow is stunning. With the old town surrounded by Planty park, it feels like a city out of a fairy tale. Precious buildings, Polish bakeries, cozy restaurants--I had very few expectations based on the little research I did beforehand, and I was blown away. In my opinion, I much preferred Krakow if I had to choose a favorite.

The importance of remembering
One of the unmissable aspects of a trip to Poland is experiencing the horror and tragedy of the concentration camps from World War II. It is a deeply somber and humbling experience to walk beyond the walls of a space that has been the focus of so much history. It was difficult to experience but important see.
A quote that is included in part of the museum that stuck with me is what George Santayana said, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” –The Life of Reason, 1905. From the series Great Ideas of Western Man.
There are many ways to see Auschwitz Memorial and Museum. My hostel had an option to book through them, but I ended up booking a group tour that was very affordable.
