Enjoying the city through the eyes of a 13 year old!

Family trips are my absolute favorite, but as my children get older I find myself craving more one on one time with them. The opportunity to have quality conversations, develop inside jokes and watch them experience things for the first time is priceless. So, for my daughters 13th birthday, we jumped on a plane and headed out to NYC! This city has been on her travel bucket list for years so we made it happen. Seeing the city through her eyes was magical and something I hope she remembers forever. I know I will. Below are the places we recommend you visit during your first trip to NYC.

Where to Stay

With 100s of hotels to choose from, it might be hard to make a decision. When searching for the perfect spot, I thought about these top factors in my selection: location, brand, price, google reviews and safety. I wanted something near Time Square and Broadway since that was where we would be at night. I did not want to have to use the Subway or a cab after a show, so finding something within a block or two was a must. Then I wanted a hotel by a brand I knew (Hilton, Hyatt or Marriott). After narrowing it down to a few, I read some of the most recent google reviews and compared prices. I landed on the below (but there are many options that might be a good fit for your family).

Things to See

When your 13, you want to see all the spots that you have seen on TV. You want to go where they filmed your favorite show or learned about in social studies class. Be sure to say yes to all the touristy spots - even if that isn't on the top of your bucket list. Here are the top spots we visited during our 3 days in the city.

Rockefeller Center

Be sure to spend some time walking around, checking out the stores and possibly taking a tour of the Rock!

Empire State Building

This was our first stop in the city! Getting a birds eye view of the entire city puts it all in perspective! Is your kid a lover of Percy Jackson? If so, they can stand in the spot where some of the movie was filmed.

Central Park
@kristageiger
Walking around Central Park is the perfect way to spend a day in NYC. This park is miles long and will take hours to explore. From grabbing a snack from one of the street vendors to watching a proposal - it will give you the time to chat with your teenager while being in one of the most amazing spots in NYC>

Times Square
@kristageiger
Stay near time square for your first trip. The hustle and bustle might not be for you but there is no place like Time Square in the US. Kids love the sites and sounds of this chaotic spot. Watch their faces light up as they walk through the square - day or night!

Statue of Liberty
@kristageiger
This very popular attraction is a must see but make sure to buy your tickets online, splurge for the ticket to go into the base (it helps you avoid some of the line getting through security) and go EARLY. Be the first of the day to avoid the heat and the crowds.

Broadway Theatre

See a show! The quality and experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity. We joined the lottery for several shows and lucked out with great seats to Wicked. We also saw Harry Potter. Must see!

Where to eat

Carbs, Carbs, Carbs! Teens love the basics - pizza, pasta, bagels and ice cream! Ask them what they want to eat. New York City if filled with amazing options but the teen just wants what they want. They might not appreciate that trendy 5-star spot that Taylor Swift ate at last week so make sure you ask them what they want and go from there. With 3 days in the city, the below places hit the spot!

Our mother-daughter trip to NYC was everything I hoped it would be. We explored the city, shared laughs, and created memories that I hope my daughter cherishes as much as I do. With only 18 summers before they’re grown, it’s so important to make the most of these moments. Time flies, and each experience is a precious opportunity to connect and create lasting memories. If you’re considering a similar trip, NYC offers endless opportunities for bonding and adventure. Cherish the journey, and happy travels!
