Best Vegan & Vegetarian Sushi in London

Best Vegan & Vegetarian Sushi in London

Valentina Balgavi
Vegan sushi might sound unusual, but it is definitely a thing. Restaurants nowadays have become incredibly creative in crafting beautiful and delicious vegan sushi rolls that will give you pause. Vegan sushi can also serve as a great alternative for those who enjoy those flavours but aren’t big fans of raw fish. I have a couple of friends who aren’t vegan but actually prefer vegan sushi over fish sushi as they find it to be less intense. Another consideration is the cost. So, I’d say it’s a win-win combination. I’ve compiled a list of some of my favourite vegan-friendly sushi restaurants in and around central London. Some of them are more affordable, while others are a bit more upscale. There’s absolutely no compromise on taste, but the ambience and service may vary.

SUSHISAMBA Covent Garden
@valentinabalgavi
Sushisamba, with its fusion of Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian influences, is a culinary gem located not only in London but also in various destinations across the globe. Each dish is a masterpiece, brimming with exquisite flavour. They have a whole separate vegan menu which is incredible so I couldn’t resist not trying the rest. I enjoyed their selection of vegan sushi that had a good combination of maki rolls and nigiri, combined with edamame, hot mushroom clay pot, asparagus robata and quinoa wraps.

Sushi Cafe
@valentinabalgavi
Sushi cafe is a restaurant that has all you can eat sushi buffet. Say what? Yup, eat as much as you like for £24.80. (Kids eat for £12.80) So you have three rounds (yes, food comes in rounds) and you get to choose six different portions of each dish – ranging from starters, tempura, rolls, noodles, buns, grill and dessert. The staff was also very helpful in guiding me through the menu and selecting the best vegan dishes.

Tokyo Diner
@valentinabalgavi
“We realise that our restaurant will only ever be as good as the people working in it. We aim to select bright, well-educated, self-motivated staff who are either Japanese or who can demonstrate that they have a high level of respect for traditional Japanese culture.”

Sexy Fish
@valentinabalgavi
Sexy Fish is located in Marylebone and it does primarily cater to seafood enthusiasts but I did manage to uncover some fantastic vegan sushi options. The ambience is stylish and very eclectic with often live music and incredible staff. While the menu does feature vegan options, you can also request a customised sushi creation if necessary. I visited a couple of times and tried their vegan sushi selection (10 pcs) and dragon maki. Other options include truffle asparagus maki, avocado and cucumber maki, bell pepper and mushroom nigiri, veggie tempura and grilled sweet potato with coconut wasabi. The vibes are simply immaculate. Perfect for a dinner night out for a date or with your friends.

Zuma London
@valentinabalgavi
Zuma London is definitely in my top three favourite vegan-friendly sushi restaurants in London. It is also on a spenny side as Sexy fish but you won’t be disappointed. Located in Knightsbridge (but tucked away) just off Brompton road, The restaurant has beautiful ringside seats by the kitchen and a massive, zen-looking dining room. They serve vegan maki rolls, nigiri, and robata-grilled dishes but always ask the staff to help you tailor the best vegan options for you. Besides sushi, don’t forget to try the grilled tofu skewers, grilled broccoli, and fruit platter.

Lucky Cat by Gordon Ramsay
@valentinabalgavi
“Swanky space evoking ’30s Tokyo drinking dens serve Gordon Ramsay’s Pan-Asian & robata grilled fare and I couldn’t agree more. The vegan sushi choice is limited but the taste is 10/10. The restaurant offers an incredible choice of other vegan dishes – I had a chance to try dragon rolls, avocado and mushroom tempura, mushroom clay pot, lettuce tofu wraps and lots of delicious cocktails. The staff were very accommodating to my needs and provided an incredible service.

Nobu London (Old Park Lane)
@valentinabalgavi
It would be a shame to have a vegan-friendly sushi restaurant list without Nobu, wouldn’t it? However, I must admit that their menu doesn’t offer an extensive range of vegan options. I enjoyed their avo and cucumber maki rolls but my choices were somewhat limited to edamame and avocado salad. While I’d love to elaborate more on Nobu, I’m certain you’ve heard about it before.
