Green Week in Belgrade: Your Ecotourism Guide

Green Week in Belgrade: Your Ecotourism Guide

💪This is a guide to ecotourism activities in Belgrade and the surrounding areas less than 100km from the capital of Serbia. If you visit Belgrade for a week or more and want to dive into the ecotourism scene or be active, this guide is for you. 🏞️ Activities like running, cycling, hiking, and kayaking are the main categories in this guide. We will also dive into safety in Belgrade because this is a question people often ask me about the country. So, I figured it is important to mention my views after living in Belgrade for nine years. ✅ You will make good use of this guide if you are in Belgrade and want to dive into the ecotourism scene in the city or just want to be active while traveling. ❌ You will not use this guide well if you are looking for recommendations for restaurants or hotel accommodations. Even though I mention some restaurants where I had a great meal after my sports, this guide focuses entirely on activities.

Welcome to Belgrade

This is the city where I chose to live for nine years!! During this time, I did my best to explore the ecotourism scene in Belgrade and Serbia as much as possible. This guide will help those who are in Belgrade for a short period and are looking for an alternative to the big nightlife scene instead of looking for ecotourism activities to stay healthy and active.

Is Serbia safe?

It is essential to answer this question here because many people ask me questions like, do people carry guns? Is there still a war going on? Isn't it dangerous? Aren't they racist? and others. These questions are pretty common among those who have never visited the country.

Having lived in Serbia for many years, these questions now seem absurd to me. However, I also didn't know what to expect before moving there. In short, Serbia is a very safe country. If you want more details about it, check out my blog post about safety in the country.

If you are a black person, you might be interested in knowing more about safety as a person of color. My experience in Serbia couldn´t be better; people are warm, welcoming, and open. For more details about my experience, check out my blog post on the link below.

Ecotourism in Serbia

Belgrade offers a unique mix of urban charm and natural beauty, plus well-preserved signs of the historical events that happened in the past. The fortress Kalemegdan, located within the historic Belgrade Fortress, provides panoramic river views and rich biodiversity.

Additionally, Ada Ciganlija is an island on the Sava River featuring forests, beaches, and trails for cycling. You can also enjoy sustainable activities such as kayaking and paddle boating.

The outskirts of Belgrade offer even more ecotourism opportunities. The Avala Mountain, just a short drive from the city center, is a protected area with diverse flora and fauna, perfect for hiking and nature walks.

There are several options to fill an entire week during your visit. This guidebook is split into different categories: Hiking, Kayaking, Running, and Cycling. You will find a list of places to do the mentioned activity for each category.

Danube River, perfect place for a running session

Activities

There are many different activities for ecotourism in Belgrade and some of them are a bit further from the city but close enough for a nice day tour.

One of the things I like about Belgrade and Serbia is how cheap it is to be active and socialize with Serbs at the same time. A perfect combination to also get into the Serbian culture and learn from the locals.

Hiking

In this selection of places to hike or go for a simple walk in nature, I added places that are less than a 100km away from Belgradez so the drive is not long. In the outskirts of the city are options available as well.

Bukulja
@dericlimazuka
Bukulja Mountain, near the town of Aranđelovac, about 80km from Belgrade, is a perfect place for a day tour. The hike around the area is not very demanding and is an excellent option for beginners. It is not one of the most prominent mountains in Serbia, but it has charm and offers a captivating escape into nature. From the peak, the reward is the stunning views of Aranđelovac. There are two lakes in the area: Bukuljsko and Garasko. Their magical views will make the day hike more enjoyable. Visiting both lakes and the mountain peak will result in a 20-km hike with an elevation gain of 627m. At the end of the hike, I recommend you stop by the Bukulja Restaurant to reward yourself with a nice post-hike meal. There’s a water source that has been used for medicinal purposes for many years now, and the water is used to produce the Knjaz Milos water. The mixture of lush forest surrounded by lakes and mountain vibes creates a unique touch in the area and sets Bukulja apart from other mountains in Serbia. When to go: From March to October.

Ada Ciganlija
@dericlimazuka
Ada Cingaljia is one of the busiest places in Belgrade on weekends, mostly when the weather is good. People visit this artificial lake for different reasons. There are enough options to keep anyone busy and have a nice day alone, with family or friends. Some main spots for outdoor activities in Ada are running, cycling, kayaking, waterboarding, and tennis. ---🏅 ACTIVITIES --- 💦 KAYAKING You can go on a kayaking tour to explore the Sava River and Belgrade. You will pass under several bridges in the Sava River, between the Brankov bridge near the Kalamegdan fortress and Ada Ciganlja. It's a nice way to explore Belgrade while keeping yourself active. A couple of agencies are offering this tour, and I left the link to them in the link section of the blog post I wrote about Kayaking in Belgrade. 🏃‍♀️RUNNING When is about running sessions, you can run a nice loop around the lake. There's a proper running lane waiting for you to enjoy it. 🚲 CYCLING For cycling sessions, you can also loop around the lake with your bicycle on the proper bike lane built there. Going cycling to explore other parts of the island is also possible. The cycling lanes are well-signalized, and there's an option to take a small boat to cross to New Belgrade, where there is another bike lake if you want to extend your activity.

Gradac River
@dericlimazuka
Gradac is one of the cleanest rivers in Europe. You can reach it by public transportation, taking the train from Belgrade or by bus. It is an excellent option for a day tour from Belgrade or Novi Sad. Gradac is the place I would call my friends to visit for a chill day in nature on the weekend. Depending on the viewpoints you want to visit, a hiking tour can range from 5 to 20 km. In my blog post, I posted two routes that I took. The first one is a longer hike I created after researching online. The second one was shorter and was done with the Explore Serbia agency. Bring enough snacks for the hike and save some space in your stomach to have a nice meal in Valjevo if you can. There is a family-owned restaurant near the river called Skok po Skok, where you'll find amazing Serbian food after the hike. When to go: From April to October.

Kalemegdan
@dericlimazuka
Kalemegdan Fortress is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in Serbian history and an active day out. It is located at the confluence of the River Sava and the Danube, this historical place offers a living journey through Serbia's past. The fortress complex, dating back to the 1st century AD, has witnessed the rise and fall of various empires, including the Romans, Byzantines, Ottomans, and Austro-Hungarians, each leaving their mark on the structure. You can explore many historical landmarks within the fortress grounds. The Military Museum showcases an impressive collection of century old artifacts, from ancient Roman swords to modern-day military equipment. The Despot's Tower and the Sahat Tower are also highlights, where you can learn more about medieval Serbian architecture and defense mechanisms. Walking through the fortress is not only an educational experience but also a physically engaging one. The Kalemegdan Park surrounds the fortress, offering numerous walking paths shaded by ancient trees. As you walk along these paths, you'll encounter panoramic views of the rivers and the cityscape of Belgrade. The park is also home to various sculptures, monuments, and a zoo. In summary, Kalemegdan Fortress is not just a static historical site but a dynamic space where history and physical activity act together.

Fruška Gora National Park
@dericlimazuka
Fruska Gora has an extensive network of trails for hiking and mountain biking. It is quite easy to get lost there. Most calls for help in Serbia from lost people in nature come from Fruska Gora. My recommendation is to find a route on Wikiloc or Maps.me in case you want to go there by yourself. Tour agencies often offer hiking tours there, and they aren't expensive. In the links section I left the route of a day hike I did there. It is a beautiful national park and a perfect destination for a day tour from Belgrade. If you plan to spend multiple days exploring the park, spending a few days in Novi Sad is an excellent idea to make a base in case you don't want to camp. In case you want to camp, there are several places to choose. Depending on your preferences, if you want to be on a more mountain landscape, Letenka or Brankovac are good options. If you want to be closer to monasteries, you can visit Jazak, Besenovo, or Mala Rameta. When to go: All year round. Even during the winter, you will find agencies offering tours.

Kayaking

Belgrade offers numerous kayaking spots, including lakes, rivers and canals worth visiting. Many of these locations are along the banks of the Danube, near the famous "splavs" area. A splav is a Serbian term for a floating restaurant , bar or club

Kayaking at the Danube River

Great War Island
@dericlimazuka
The uninhabited river island at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers is mostly forested, with few mammal species living there due to its isolation and frequent flooding. The island has a circumference of 7 km, and its southern side faces the Kalemegdan Fortress, offering incredible views for kayakers. The island's main feature is the Veliki Galijaš canal. Tours of the island typically loop around it, exploring all sides and entering the Veliki Galijaš canal and the Lido beach area on the north side.

Zemun
@dericlimazuka
Zemun is a historic district in Belgrade, Serbia. It offers kayaking enthusiasts the chance to explore the Danube River. It's a great place for running sessions and simple walks along the river. One of the highlights in the area is the Gardos Tower, where you can have a great view of Belgrade and Zemun from the top. ---🏅 ACTIVITIES --- 💦 KAYAKING Kayaking in Zemun provides a unique perspective of the city, allowing one to glide along the river's gentle currents while enjoying panoramic views of the surroundings. If you want to extend your day a bit more, I recommend you to check out the Gardos Tower in Zemun. From the top, you have a great view of the Danube, Zemun, and Belgrade. The kayaking tour I did was offered by the NoFatNoStress company. They were very professional, and the equipment was new. On their page, you will see other kayaking adventures they offer. 🚲 CYCLING Zemun offers a chill bike ride along the Danube River with great views. You can start cycling from the Usce Park and follow the bike lane until Zemun. There's a proper lane for cycling, which can be pretty busy on weekends. Even if it is winter, don't let the cold weather hold you if it is not snowing. Pack some warm clothes and enjoy the view. 💡FINAL TIPS Hungry after some activity in Zemum? I got your back!! My recommendation is to have a meal at the Reka Restaurant in Zemun if you like fish; the food there is great!! It's one of my favorite restaurants in Belgrade.

Sava Promenade
@dericlimazuka
This fascinating tour begins at Ada Ciganlija and crosses under six bridges along the Sava River. Starting at the Ada Bridge, it passes the New Railway Bridge, Old Railway Bridge, Gazela Bridge, Old Sava Bridge, and concludes after the Brankov Bridge. Ada Ciganlija is a well-known spot in Belgrade, offering a relaxing environment with many activities like cycling, running, wakeboarding, and golf. While most activities are popular in the summer, the area remains a favorite destination for Serbs even in winter. This tour called The Six Bridges provides a fantastic opportunity to explore part of Ada Ciganlija and the riverside of Belgrade, extending to the Kalemegdan Fortress.

Running

While you could go for a running session almost anywhere, I will list here my two favorite spots for you to enjoy your session as I do in Belgrade.

Ušće
@dericlimazuka
Ušće Park is a great green space in the vibrant capital of Serbia. Located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, the park offers river views and a refreshing escape from the city's hustle and bustle. Its well-maintained pathways are great for a walk or a running session, and various recreational areas make it a popular spot for locals and tourists looking for outdoor activities. I go to Ušće for running sessions all year round. The area is big enough to cover a 10km run with pleasure due to its scenic route. Don't be surprised when you see many people running there as well; it's one of the most famous spots for runners in Belgrade. The flat, even terrain ensures a smooth run for your sessions.

Cycling

Unfortunately, Serbia is not very bike-friendly. However, I believe this shouldn’t stop you from experiencing cycling around Belgrade. The Eurovelo project has two routes passing by the city: Routes 6 and 11.

You have two good options for a cycling tour in Belgrade that I will list here in this guide. The third option is a tour leading to Novi Sad, the second-biggest city in the country. You should spend at least one night in Novi Sad to feel the city better and explore it a bit. It is an exciting place with a low-key, chilled vibe.

Novi Sad
@dericlimazuka
This cycling adventure from Belgrade to Novi Sad is through alternative roads that are not busy. It's recommended to start early in the morning because sun exposure during the day is high. If you don't want to return to Belgrade cycling, you can use the speed train from Novi Sad to Belgrade and put your bicycle in it. I created a guide in my blog with more details about this adventure. Several small cities and gas stations are on the way, and there are many options to refill your water or buy snacks. I suggested having a nice meal at the end of the tour in Novi Sad. Many restaurants serve high-quality food in Novi Sad, and I am leaving my top 3 recommendations saved in the blog post.

Events

If you are in Belgrade during April, September, October, or November, don't miss the chance to join the biggest sports event in the city: Beogradski Maraton, a Serbian word for Belgrade Marathon.

This event happens every year in April, but there are other events throughout the year, like a 10k race in September and a Women's Race in October.

There's also a half marathon in November, so if you are into running, don't miss the chance to participate in this incredible event!!
