Theatine Church

"The Theatinerkirche (St. Kajetan’s Church) is a stunning Baroque masterpiece at Odeonsplatz, with a history deeply intertwined with Bavarian royalty. Built between 1663 and 1690, it was commissioned by Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife, Henriette Adelaide of Savoy, as a gesture of gratitude to God for the birth of their long-awaited heir, Prince Maximilian II Emanuel. The church was designed by Italian architect Agostino Barelli, making it one of the earliest examples of Italian Baroque architecture in Germany. The Theatinerkirche’s striking yellow façade and grand dome were later enhanced by architect Enrico Zucalli, blending Bavarian tradition with its Italian inspiration. Inside, the church features ornate stucco decorations and marble detailing, housing the royal tombs of the Wittelsbach dynasty. Its towering dome and twin spires make it a prominent feature of Munich’s skyline. The church played an essential role as the spiritual center of the Theatine Order, known for their education and missionary work.
