"With its exuberant biodiversity and crystal-clear waters, the Garajau Partial Nature Reserve is one of the most special places on the island of Madeira, where nature reigns supreme in all its beauty and serenity. This emblematic space is home to the Cristo Rei Viewpoint. Located in the parish of Caniço, in the municipality of Santa Cruz, this observatory offers a panoramic view of the natural heritage of Garajau, part of the bay of Funchal and also of Caniço de Baixo, an important tourist centre. Visitors here also have access to a privileged view of the Atlantic Ocean. The Cristo Rei Viewpoint owes its name to the statue of the Sacred Heart of Jesus erected on this site. It is an imposing sculpture of Jesus Christ, with open arms, facing the ocean. It was financed and built by councillor Aires de Ornelas, son of the last landowner of Caniço. Inaugurated on October 30, 1927, this majestic statue, erected on top of a coastal ravine, is an unmistakable feature of the scenery that visitors encounter at the Cristo Rei Viewpoint. Due to its scenic and historical value, this is a must-see on the east coast of Madeira."
