" Skaftafell is a nature reserve named after Skaftafell glacier (a spur of Vatnajökull glacier). The nature of the area is nothing short of sensational, where green vegetation meets the glacier and mountains. There are a lot of hiking paths in the area, leading to various attractions, one of the best known is Svartifoss waterfall. The name Svartifoss, “black waterfall”, refers to the dark basalt columns that surround it.  A round trip to waterfall is about 5.5 kilometres (3.4 miles) long and takes about 1 hour. The trail is well indicated. Further information about the condition of the trails can be obtained at the Skaftafell visitor centre. Also note that there is a large campground, but wild camping is prohibited within the Vatnajökull National Park."

"
"The Skaftafell Nature Reserve is a gem of the Vatnajökull National Park, which houses Europe's largest glacier. The landscape was molded by volcanic eruptions, glaciers, and lakes, producing a plethora of unique geological formations.
