The Golden Lane

What people say

" Zlatá ulička, or Golden Lane, is one of the most iconic and picturesque spots within Prague Castle, dating back to the end of the 15th century when new northern fortifications were constructed. This charming street is lined with colorful houses and is steeped in legends, attracting numerous artists and writers, including the renowned Franz Kafka, who lived there during World War I. The dwellings along Golden Lane were initially occupied by various castle workers, such as archers and goldsmiths. While the alley retained its picturesque character throughout renovations during the First Republic, the last residents vacated the houses in 1953. Today, visitors can explore the exhibition showcasing life in this historic alley over its 500 years of existence. House No. 13 exemplifies a 16th-century Renaissance dwelling that once belonged to the castle gunner, while House No. 14 features a model of a pre-World War II residence that belonged to the famed card reader Matylda Průšová. The film historian Josef Kazda also resided in House No. 12, where he hid Czechoslovak film copies from the Nazis. Visitors can enjoy film projections depicting early cinematography related to Prague Castle in this house. The unique aesthetics of Zlatá ulička were notably influenced by artist Jiří Trnka, who designed the colorful facades of the houses in the 1950s, enhancing the area's charming appearance on Golden Lane and its historical significance."

"Less than 5 minutes away from the castle, you will find this charming alley, built in the XVI-th century to host the guards working in the castle. The tiny houses will their colorful walls will take you back in time. You will also find some cute cafés: I recommend "Cafe U Vcekare". "
