Old Royal Palace

"The Old Royal Palace at Prague Castle is a complex structure that reflects the architectural evolution of royal residences over the centuries. Its oldest part, the Romanic underground, dates back to after 1135 and includes remnants of Soběslav’s Romanic palace. This section features significant structures, such as a passageway through the Southern spired gate, remains of fortifications, and the foundational elements of the Romanic Chapel of All Saints. Above the Romanic foundations lies the Gothic floor, constructed during the reign of Charles IV. It includes notable rooms like Charles’ Hall, which is characterized by its heavy vault supported by low barrel columns. The Column Hall of Václav IV, dating from around 1400, is particularly remarkable for its large windows and significant Gothic architecture. These areas were used for various important functions and illustrate the grandeur of the royal residence during the Gothic period. The representative floor is highlighted by Vladislav’s Hall, which was constructed between 1492 and 1502. This hall is one of the largest secular spaces in medieval Prague, featuring a stunning net vault and large windows, marking a transition to Renaissance architecture. It has been the site of various state events, including knights' tournaments and official banquets. Adjacent to this hall are the Green Room and the Small Audience Chamber, both of which feature Gothic vaults and reflect the court's historical functions. The Ludvík's Wing, built between 1503 and 1520, is another essential part of the palace. It includes significant rooms associated with the Bohemian Office and is historically important due to events like the Second Prague Defenestration. The Theresian Wing, constructed in the late 18th century, serves as a connecting space and provides observation areas overlooking the gardens. All Saints’ Church, initially a Romanic chapel, was reconstructed after a fire in 1541. It features a Baroque main altar and is linked to Vladislav’s Hall, demonstrating the blending of architectural styles over time. Today, the Gothic floor houses a permanent exhibition titled "The Story of Prague Castle," which presents the history and significance of the castle through models, artifacts, and thematic displays."

"In the early 14th century, Charles IV expanded the Romanesque structure into a Gothic palace, featuring arcades and a vaulted interior. His son, Wenceslas IV, rebuilt All Saints' Chapel and added two wings. After decades of neglect, King Vladislav Jagiello began major restorations in 1483, adding the grand Vladislav Hall, designed by Benedikt Ried, which combined Renaissance elements with Late Gothic art."

Its Vladislav Hall is used for inaugurations and is the most important representative hall in the country. Overall, we found the interior rather austere, but it is definitely one of the must-see locations in the castle."
