Lucia Currie
"Playa Zicatela, stretching 3.5 kilometers from Playa Principal to La Punta, is a legendary surfing destination known as the "Mexican Pipeline." With waves reaching staggering heights of up to 16 meters, it’s a magnet for professional surfers who tackle the swells. Heading down here at sunrise and watching the surfers catch the waves is a mesmerising spectacle and great start to the day. However, please note that the powerful waves and rip currents make swimming here an absolute no-go — I've never so much as dipped in beyond my ankles. Beyond the waves, Zicatela boasts a vibrant beachfront scene. Bars and restaurants line the promenade, offering the perfect setting to enjoy a cocktail while watching the sunset. I would say that, in general, this area is somewhat less charming than La Punta, probably because it is home to the town's nightclubs. It was many months before I even stepped foot in this area in the daylight, and it is visibly less aesthetically appealing. That being said, you'll see I've pinned some fantastic beach bars here, and they tend to be less heaving at sunset than La Punta, so it totally depends on what you're after. The beach is also home to prestigious international surf competitions, typically held during the Northern Hemisphere’s summer. If you're lucky enough to be in town during one of these events, be sure to check online for dates — you'll have the chance to witness world-class surfing at one of the most iconic surf beaches in the world."
"This is the most touristic and busy beach, but its huge lenght can make possible that you find a quiet place if you prefer so. It is located in the party area of Puerto Escondido. "
