"The Helix Bridge, officially named The Helix and previously known as the Double Helix Bridge, is a striking pedestrian bridge that connects Marina Centre and Marina South in Singapore's Marina Bay area. Officially opened on April 24, 2010, the bridge initially allowed access to only half of its structure due to ongoing construction at Marina Bay Sands, with the full bridge opening later on July 18 of the same year.
Designed by a consortium comprising Australian architects Cox Architecture and engineers Arup, along with Singapore-based Architects 61, the Helix Bridge features a unique architectural design inspired by the double helix structure of DNA. This design is accentuated by pairs of colored letters—c and g, as well as a and t—lit up in red and green at night, representing the four bases of DNA: cytosine, guanine, adenine, and thymine. Notably, the bridge’s design exhibits a left-handed DNA twist, which is contrary to the natural right-handed DNA found on Earth, earning it a place in The Left Handed DNA Hall of Fame in 2010.
The bridge is not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing, featuring canopies made of fritted glass and perforated steel mesh along parts of its inner spiral, providing shade for pedestrians. It includes four viewing platforms strategically located to offer stunning views of the Singapore skyline and various events occurring within Marina Bay. At night, the Helix Bridge is beautifully illuminated, highlighting its distinctive double-helix form and creating a captivating visual experience for visitors.
Recognized for its innovative design, the Helix Bridge has received multiple accolades, including the 'World's Best Transport Building' award at the World Architecture Festival Awards in 2010, and it was acknowledged by the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) with a safety excellence award in 2011. The Land Transport Authority describes it as a world first in architectural and engineering bridge design, cementing its status as a landmark in Singapore."
