"Rua de Santa Maria stretches from Rua Brigadeiro Oudinot, next to Largo do Poço, and continues with its history to Socorro, in the area of Barreirinha and the church of Socorro.
According to António Aragão, in the early days of the settlement there was a small church there, the church of Santa Maria do Calhau, from which “a floor that slid down to the pebble” extended and which “served as a social space for socializing and commerce”.
The documents state that a street ran east from this church and next to it was an improvised cemetery and a public well.
With a linear occupation structure, which adapted to the physical conditions of the place, this urban centre extended “along the strip of flat land facing the sea, parallel to the pebble”. From the Ribeira de Santa Maria to Corpo Santo.
Now, it is this street that, in a natural way, resulted from this implantation and was given the name Rua de Santa Maria do Calhau. The street that was reborn with painted doors and the life that João Carlos Abreu brought back with his return to its origins."
