"Although Andechs is quite a ways from Munich proper, it remains insanely popular with locals and tourists alike. (Near From Home Video upcoming!) It boasts a jaunt out of Munich to a gorgeous orange/yellow monastery where the monks, of course, brew the famous Andechs beer. A local alternative to the Munich big six Helles beers, day-trippers from around Munich travel on the weekends to this lovely getaway to enjoy the nice weather and each others’ company.
From the central train station take the S8 in the direction of Herrsching. Exit the train at the final stop (again, Herrsching) and either hike, following signs in the direction of Andechs or opt for the 951 bus in the direction of Starnberg Nord. We have been twice, and opted both times for the hour long hike. The path takes you through the forest surrounding the hill top monastery. The elevation is very gradual, so it’s no surprise that there are always dozens of families with small children making the pilgrimage. Once at the monastery, enjoy the view, and explore the church before heading to the beer garden. There are several separate rooms for different categories of food, so check them all out before making your final selection. Afterwards walk or bus back to Herrsching, and wander to the village downtown, nestled on the banks of the Ammersee. it's a truly wonderful way to end the day. "
