PROST! Which beer gardens are great? Which are a rip off? Where do I go as a local? Well, it's 5 o'clock somewhere, not that the Bavarians care. 🙈 So, go to a beer garden and do as Münchner do.
# What You get #
This exhaustive list is the culmination of four years of drinking in Munich. From scouring blogs to trying the recommendations of our local friends, we frequent all these locations often, so rest assured that these spots are quality and authentic. Hell, you might even see me there. 😊
Additionally, each recommendation has a paragraph description with my tips and tricks, and personal anecdotes based on years of experience living in this city.
# Important Note #
All of these recommendations are also available in my Ultimate Munich Food Guide! So if this guide, and a couple of others, have your fancy then it'll cheaper for you to buy that guide instead.

Our Ultimate Beer Garden Guide!
Hofbräukeller
@NearFromHome
Do not confuse HofbräuKELLER with the over-touristed, expensive, and subpar HofbräuHAUS that confusingly tops the list of every ‘Munich Must Do’ travel itinerary. This beer garden and restaurant offer quality Bavarian food, but in what I consider to be the best atmosphere in Munich. Like many of my recommendations, I would really emphasise visiting in the warmer months, as the indoor seating is nice, but absolutely does not convey the wonderful beer garden vibes that make living in Munich so great. The garden seating is closely packed. It's just big enough that you don’t have to worry about finding a seat, (even on weekends) while also not feeling too expansive and isolating. The food is self service, and there is a little play park area that is always full of small kids. Come by after work on a day with great weather, and expect to find me unwinding with a beer and some friends. While probably losing at backgammon.
Personal Anecdote: I always have my low key birthday celebration here! I cannot emphasise enough how much I love the atmosphere.

Hirschgarten
@NearFromHome
The Hirschgarten is a unique and quirky stop offering your typical Munich beer garden experience, with the added bonus of deer! Along with being situated within a massive park, this beer garden is perfect for children and children at heart. A real locals family beer garden. For those of you who are still a little, understandably, confused the German word ‘Hirsch’ translates to deer and the Hirschgarten definitely delivers with its large deer enclosure nearby. Snag the prime seating which shares a wall with the deer section, for a truly unique beer garden experience. OK, maybe don’t sit righttt next to the enclosure, as these deer kind of smell. Rather, I usually opt to sit in the centre of the seating area, taking breaks from drinking and eating to walk over and admire the deer. This beer garden can feel a little large and intimidating, but just remember that it’s the largest beer garden in Munich! It is also self service and CASH ONLY. This is also an excellent stop after a day spent exploring the nearby Nymphenburg Palace and Botanical Gardens.
