Castle of Kruja

"Krujë Castle has stood atop a rugged cliff, towering over the city of Krujë, for fifteen centuries, bearing witness to the region’s tumultuous history. Once the heart of Arbëria, the ancient name for Albania, the castle is particularly renowned for its role during the Ottoman period, when it became a symbol of resistance under the leadership of Gjergj Kastriot Skanderbeg, Albania’s legendary national hero. Skanderbeg led a revolt against the Ottomans in 1443 and defended the castle against relentless Ottoman attacks for thirty-five years until his death in 1468. Despite the persistent efforts of the Ottoman forces, including several major sieges, Skanderbeg and his force of three thousand men managed to keep the castle unconquered during his lifetime. However, in 1478, ten years after Skanderbeg's death, the castle finally fell to Sultan Mehmed II. The castle, believed to have been built as early as the 5th century, had endured numerous challenges before these events, but it is Skanderbeg’s defiant stand that has forever enshrined the castle in Albanian national identity, symbolizing the perseverance of a small yet indomitable force. Within the castle’s ruins, the Old Clock Tower still stands, bearing the same bell that tolled to announce Skanderbeg’s death. This clock, crafted by artisans from Krujë’s Old Bazaar, once regulated the daily rhythms of the city, from shop hours to times of prayer. Nearby, the National Museum “Gjergj Kastriot Skënderbeu” stands prominently, its design the work of architects Pirro Vaso and Pranvera Hoxha, who were also involved in creating the Pyramid of Tirana. Built in the early 1980s, the museum is an iconic feature of the castle’s silhouette, offering visitors a detailed exploration of Skanderbeg’s life, his military victories, and achievements. The museum also displays replicas of his distinctive helmet, adorned with a goat’s head, and his sword, providing a tangible connection to Albania’s storied past."
