Gorica Bridge

"Located in the heart of Berat, the Gorica Bridge is one of the most stunning Ottoman bridges in the Balkan region, serving as a vital link between the city and the Gorica neighborhood. One particularly grim tale tells of a young woman who was buried alive within the bridge’s structure to ensure its foundations remain strong forever. The locals take great pride in sharing the stories behind this landmark, emphasizing its artistic rarity and cultural significance. Scholars also recognize the bridge's importance, admiring its original design that beautifully blends modern and traditional architectural elements. The first official mention of the Gorica Bridge can be found in the travel journals of the renowned Ottoman chronicler, Evliya Çelebi. Originally constructed of wood in 1780 by Ahmet Kurt Pasha of Berat, the bridge was built during a time when the two communities on either side of the Osum River sought to strengthen their connections, particularly as the Gorica neighborhood experienced population growth. Unfortunately, the bridge sustained damage from explosions at the end of World War I in 1918. However, it was promptly and thoroughly rebuilt in the 1920s, this time using stone, resulting in the structure we see today.
