"Three years before the Stonewall Riots and right around the corner, there was the “sip-in” at Julius’ that marked another turning point in LGBTQ+ history. In 1966, gay rights organization ‘The Mattachine Society’ staged an event that would challenge and bring to light the New York State Liquor Authority’s discrimination of the gay community.
Following Prohibition, bars were allowed to resume but only if they weren’t disorderly. At the time, the mere presence of LBGT individuals was considered “disorderly” and so bars would refuse serving them. If there was evidence of their establishment being disorderly, they ran the risk of having their liquor license removed and being shut down.
The sip-in resulted in LGBT people being able to congregate and be served in bars, thus setting the stage for Stonewall. Since then, Julius’ was claimed by the community and operates as the oldest gay bar in all of New York City. And yes, it’s another cash only spot!"
