A Walk Through West Village's Must See Gems
🏡 Jefferson Market Library
A bell named, “Old Jeff” was silent until 1997 for nearly 135 years. Thanks to a few ardent village preservationists, the Gothic Clocktower at Jefferson Market Library rings hourly from 9am to 10pm
🏡 The Stonewall Inn
The Stonewall Inn stands as a U.S. National Historic Landmark and a symbol of LGBTQ+ pride. The 1969 Stonewall Riots, which took place here, marked a pivotal moment in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights.
🍸Julius Bar
A favorite Village dive that happens to also serve one of the best burgers in all of NYC. It was founded in 1864 and has became a renowned headquarters for the gay community.
🏡 Village Cigars
After decades on Christopher Street the smoke shop has closed down due to a rent dispute but it's still a a classic West Village corner with some solid people watching. Highly recommend for photo bugs and history buffs.
🏡 The Hess Triangle
0000797113 of an acre. A symbol of defiance and resistance —the Hess Triangle is the smallest piece of private land ever owned in New York City. In 1913 David Hess lost everything to the city’s eminent domain laws except for this tiny portion of concrete which he held onto until 1938 when he sold the slice to Village Cigars for $1000 bucks.
🏡 The Northern Dispensary
Providing free medical care to the "worthy poor" for over 150 years. Just prior to World War II around half of the dispensaries effort was in dental work and by the 60s it had become solely a dental clinic for those who could not afford care. Unfortunately, the clinic closed in the late 1980s after a lawsuit stemming from its refusal to treat a man with AIDS, while the building sat vacant for roughly the next two decades. But there's good news. God’s Love We Deliver leased the building in 2022 and is using it to provide meals to people living with serious illnesses.
📚Three Lives & Company
A beautifully curated indie bookstore with a great assortment of new and hard to find to books. Cozy and a must visit when in NYC.
🏡 The "Friends" Apartment
The corner of Bedford and Grove Street in Greenwich Village is a famous location that has been featured in the popular TV show “Friends” as the exterior of Rachel, Monica, Joey, and Chandler’s residence. The six-story apartment building is a popular tourist attraction and is recognized by fans of the show worldwide. The show actually used an exterior shot of the building and taped the show on a soundstage in Burbank, Ca. 3000 miles away from NYC.
🎭 Cherry Lane Theatre
A small Off-Broadway theatre that has the distinction of being New York City's oldest, continuously operating Off-Broadway theatre. It was first a farm, then served as a brewery turned box factory, before it was converted into a theater in 1923. A24, the Indie Film Studio purchased the Cherry Lane Theater for $10 million and plans to present plays as well as other forms of live entertainment here.
🏡 The Narrowest House in New York
The Greenwich Village house built in 1873 is only 9-feet-6-inches wide and one that’s become famous -- in part because Edna St. Vincent Millay lived here in the 1920s.
🏡 Grove Street Court
New York City street and its gated block of million-dollar homes was once called Pigs Alley or Mixed Ale Alley, names that suggest the area was less than desirable. Grove Court now is an exclusive stretch of Village real estate.
