"❤️ There will forever be a special place in my heart for the tiny village of Hellnar. I’ve spent a few weeks here in a rented cottage and would return in a heartbeat.
📍 With the Atlantic Ocean on one side, Snæfellsjökull looming behind and surrounded by lava fields, Hellnar is magical.
🍰 Park at the harbour and walk down to the cute cafe, open only in the summer.
💚 Wander further down to the small beach made of huge black boulders.
🌊 There’s a fabulous rock arch and sea cave. Spend time admiring the intricate rock formations. And watch (from a distance) as ocean waves roar in and out of the sea cave.
🧝 The Huldufólk, or Hidden People (elves), are part of Iceland's folklore.
👉 Roads can be rerouted so as not to disturb the elves.
❤️ Allegedly, there are hidden people in Hellnar (I have no proof), but you might become a believer when you see these otherworldly rock formations.
🚶Continue past the arch to the boardwalk where the hike through the lava fields starts.
👉 From Hellnar to Arnarstrapi, it's a 2.5 km / 1.5-mile walk in each direction and takes about 2 hours round trip.
💎 Wander amongst the moss-covered lava rocks and take in the ocean views from the cliffs, home to thousands of soaring sea birds.
👇 I've included a link below to the cottage next to the one I rented in Hellnar. As you enter the village, you'll see a cluster of black cottages with white trim.
🔗 I can no longer find the contact to my cottage as I did a private rental. But this cottage on Booking.com and has three bedrooms, so great if you’re travelling in a group.
