ANDREA MATTINA

"The Basilica di Santa Maria del Popolo (Basilica of St. Mary of the People) is a minor basilica and titular church in Rome, Italy. It stands on the northern side of Piazza del Popolo, one of the most famous squares in the city, and is considered one of the most significant buildings of the Roman Renaissance.
The church has a long and interesting history. Originally a small chapel built in the 11th century, it was later expanded and rebuilt several times. The most significant reconstruction occurred between 1472 and 1477 under Pope Sixtus IV, transforming it into the Renaissance church we see today. Over the centuries, many skilled architects and artists, including Raphael, Bramante, Bernini, Caravaggio, and Pinturicchio, have contributed to its design and decoration.
The Basilica of Santa Maria del Popolo is a beautiful example of Renaissance architecture, with a harmonious blend of classical and Christian elements. The facade is simple yet elegant, with a central portal and two flanking niches. The interior is richly decorated with frescoes, paintings, and sculptures by renowned artists."

"Both Caravaggio paintings in this church, The Crucifixion of St. Peter and The Conversion of St. Paul, bring their subjects out into our space, filling their canvases entirely, overwhelming us with their realism, and creating unease with their inherent instabilityāand at the same time moving us with their intensely personal nature. It is virtually impossible not to be affected by these works, and it's little wonder they are two of his most renowned.

The Crucifixion of Saint Peter (1601)
The Conversion of Saint Paul (1601)
Note: This church is closed for restorations from Oct 2023 until some time in 2024. Check back for updates!"
