"Built in the 1500s as a palace and fortress for the ruling d'Avalos family, the Palazzo d'Avalos is a prominent landmark for Procida's history. In the 1700s the site was then taken over by the Bourbon royal family and turned into a residence and private hunting ground. With the ultimate fall of the Bourbon, Palazzo d'Avalos became a military school and finally a prison which remained open and operational until 1988 when it was finally abandoned.

Later, in 1734, it was taken over by the Bourbons and in the 18th century was transformed in a prison. In 1988, it was permanently closed, until recently, when the building was purchased by the Municipality of Procida and reconstructed.
