"One hundred years ago, Madrid stopped at Lavapiés. And then it was just farmland and fields south to the river. And on the river was the city’s slaughter house (built thus so the blood could flow into the river!). And slaughter house in Spanish is “matadero”. Nowadays the beautiful Neo-Mudéjar complex is free to enter, and there are always modern art exhibitions on. Plus it’s just an interesting and pretty area to walk through and on weekends it is filled with families."

"Stunning cultural center with a cafe, museum exhibits that change seasonally, a restaurant and bar. And the best part? It’s all free 😍 definitely recommend heading there. They also have wifi so it’s a great place to work if you’re on the go. "

Madrid may not have Barcelona’s reputation for excellence in design, but its broad sweep of architectural history provides a glorious backdrop to city life, from medieval mansions and royal palaces to the unimagined angles of Spanish contemporary architecture, from the sober brickwork and slate spires of Madrid baroque to the extravagant confections of the belle époque. En fin, Madrid done right never disappoints. This itinerary outlines the best way to spend a few days exploring my city with a range of restaurants and activities to choose from.
