Joey Helms
"Easily one of my favourite places in Iceland overall and also one of the hardest to get to. To get to this dormant volcano covered in lush green moss and situated in the middle of an dark soil valley one has to cross multiple rivers and traverse trickier terrain, but it is absolutely worth as it teleports you to a totally different planet. From the main ring road you can either take the F210 or F232 (or both), both roads lead to Maelifell from the East side which is highly recommended. In theory you can also approach it from the West, but the rivers are much deeper there and require likely a mountain vehicle. PHOTO TIPS Key to capturing an astonishing photo in this location is to make use of the colour contrast between the black ash and the green volcano. Wait for the moment (and it will come since weather changes fast there) when the sun light hits the volcano as you will see the colour really stand out then. You can pretty much get around the entire volcano so experiment with angles that fit the time of day you get there (which will most likely be midday since I wouldn't recommend travelling there when it is dark). You can also climb up Maelifell (it's higher than it first looks like) to give you a chance to capture the valley and nearby glacier from an elevated spot. WATCH OUT! It can get extremely windy in that valley, blasting dust everywhere. Make sure your equipment is sealed and your car doors and windows are closed as the fine black dust gets everywhere."
"This is a stunning volcano that stands in the midst of a black desert sand. The contrast between the green and the black can be amazing depending on the time of the day you come to visit it, as the sun light has a lot to do when it comes to colors. In addtion, on the other side, you can see the Mýrdalsjökull glacier at relatively close, and that's awesome, too. "
