Langisjór

"Surprisingly this spot does not come up in many guides and research. That's why I put this 'hidden' gem first for you since it is absolutely worth the drive out there. Situated at the West end of Vatnajökull NP Langisjór is a narrow lake that stretches out for 20km and is sorrounded by mountains. Prime terrain for long hikes and absolutely stunning photos. There is a campground if you approach it from the West (F235) and you will have to ford multiple smaller rivers to get there. PHOTO TIP When you first get there (from the West side) Turn right at the campsite and head toward the small mountain at the South West end of the lake and climb it (takes about 30 mins to get to a high spot). From the you can overlook the lake to the North East and the magnificent highland ranges in the North and West (see cover photo above). It is particularly spectecular during sunset or sunrise and when the fog from the ocean makes its way into the valleys. Take advantage of any weather conditions you may encounter. "
